Buying Articles - Duplicate Content?

So, I just started the whole buying custom content/articles thing recently.

From what I understand, most people buy content, put them up on article submission sites, toss in a link to their sites, and reap in the traffic. Correct?

What I don't understand is if they are putting the same custom article on their website?

For example, I just bought a few articles the other day and through them up on my website. I haven't submitted any yet to article directories as I feel I could potentially get penalized by Google for duplicate content (my site and the article site having the same article).

Can someone expand on this process for me? I am a bit confused about it, and for the time being, think I am just going to buy content to keep on my website and not submit anywhere. I'm sure an article submission site could rank higher than I could for the same article we submit, therefore making it look like I copied it from there, not vice versa.

That is a problem that many webmasters face when dealing with articles. It seems like everyone has a different strategy. I choose to just distribute the articles without posting them on my site. That way I'm not risking any kind of penalties. Other people post the article on their site, give it some time so search engines find it, then submit it to directories. Another technique some people use is slightly changing the article each time they submit it somewhere in an attempt to make it unique each time.

It really depends if you want to use the articles for direct traffic or for links.

I posted a small blog post on this, and if you read Google's own responses you'll see that their policy on duplicate content isn't half as strict as is imagined.

Here's the post, Duplicate Content Penalty: Myth or Not.

    Hope it helps you.

There is no duplicate content penalty. PERIOD. Use the search function if you want to learn more, I can't be bothered to repeat what I've said a dozen times over the past few days

i submited like 15 to article sites. However the traffic was bad and the articles on either sites ranked higher than me so why would people come to my site? keep em on your site.

Write a short version for the article submission sites and put the full version on your site.

Duplicate content is primarily an issue when it's on the same site.

Okay, maybe I shouldn't have used the word penalty. But I can be sure that no 2 websites are going to rank for exactly the same content on the same keywords, so why would I give an article submission site my beautiful content for a little traffic?

I like what the one guy suggested -- short version for the article sites, long version for my website.

    Any other thoughts?

So are you saying that if I build a website with 100% all unique content, but I am using products from an affiliate site that use the affiliate sites descriptions that are being hosted on my site I won't be penalized for duplicate content?

Misconception. Read the post from Google, a link to which is available in my post before this.

There still is a duplicate content penalty --

    From the link you posted:

There are some penalties that are related to the idea of having the same content as another site—for example, if you're scraping content from other sites and republishing it, or if you republish content without adding any additional value. These tactics are clearly outlined (and discouraged) in our Webmaster Guidelines:

So, if I make a website with a ton of pages copied from other sites...thats going to be an issue.

As long as you wait for the article to be cached on your site first, you won't get a duplicate content penalty. Think about it. Somebody could post your article in other places without you knowing it. Why would you get penalized for that? So as long as Google recognizes you had it first, you'll be fine.

I think you ought to read some of Google's actual words on the subject and I ensure you they are smart enough to figure who is the issuing site and being first has nothing to do with it.
