Well, that gas station in the pic was the last one of its kind to operate on old Route 66. It's in Dwight, IL. just south of Joliet. When those pumps were in operation, it was about .23 cents per gallon. It was better gas too!

Ours went up 46 cents in 4 days. NO SHIT!!!

I paid $3.40/gal on Sunday, and $4.29/gal today. That $3.40 was down in Missouri where they do not have that rape me gas tax like we do. We were well under $4/gal in WI for some time with it creeping down more and more.

What pisses me off is that the price of oil, per barrel at its high of $140/barrel did not warrant much more than close to $4/gal for gas. But now, with the per barrel price under $100 at around almost $50 less per barrel, we are paying even more.

Realistically, gas should be around, $2.98/gal nationally at that level.

wow, yeah, that is pretty bad for it to jump like that!

Funny how that is right, oil goes down by a HUGE leap from a few months ago say, but gas only trickles down a few dimes  They spoil rape us!

Because the gas stations ARE making money. They will try to tell you they are not, but they are full of shit.

It only costs $2 at the $140/barrel level, per gallon for gas. This includes the drilling, the transport, the refining, marketing, transportation, etc., to the gas station.

The rest? Tax, and what's left over? The gas station owners. I know they bitch and moan that they are not making anything, but if that were true why sell that crap?

Far as I can tell, they make around 60 cents/gal on average. No, with gouging, it likely well over a buck. Not a bad ROI IMO, based on their costs.

Remember, its not just the OPEC terrorist nations screwing us. Its the mom and pop gas stations too.

Yet the big profits are going into the pockets of big oil, not the local gas stations. Plus states like WI have minimums they have to sell it over what they pay, I forget where it was but within the past year a station was being investigated for doing just that, selling for less than they legally can, even though they were barely under the rest.

They do make money, they make most of their money of the convenience goods from everything I always heard and the mass amounts they sell. $.06 a gallon profit for instance x 10,000 gallons a day does add up. Nowhere near the levels of what the big oil companies are getting though.

$.60 a gallon profit in Wisconsin, would love to see something to back that up. Every single time I have watched the news on this same item 'gas prices' the news goes through the laws, shows the wholesale prices and the fact that the stations are marking it up the bare minimum in most all cases to keep competitive.

    Has it changed?

I guess this is kinda broaching the P/R are, so all I will say to continue is that "big oil" is making no more a profit percentage now, than they were when gas was $1.50/gal. It's still around 7% or so. And do keep in mind that it is the most over taxed industry on the planet.

That said, the ones making the real money is our own government.

It's not something that can be easily backed up since gas station owners keep this a closely guarded secret. Ask one some day, just how much they make. Good luck getting an answer.

What you are thinking of as far as the "minimum" price is not a minimum sale price, but rather a dumping law that forbids retailers from selling a commodity at less than they pay for it. What they do not want to see is a gas station owner selling $4/gallon gas for 1980's prices. Personally, I'd rather see the gas wars come back. Stations in Texas used to do this years ago. It was fun to watch.

    Still making record profits.
The government also secures the oil, also pays for the roads. I don't like the taxes either, but it's not like they just take the money for nothing.

I've actually talked to many gas station owners in the past, from my experience they are pretty open with it. I also used to work at a gas station, actually a large trucking station for semi's. Weigh station, restaurant, garage, etc and the facts back then back up what I know of today, as the news state from talking to the owners and the managers.
It is a minimum price above that of the wholesale price, a minimum markup required which equates to a minimum price depending on the wholesale price at that time.

Price wars would kill small businesses, big business would triumph.

    http://www.wpri.org/Reports/Volume21/Vol21No6/Vol21No6p1.html
Some interesting info that shows the increase of oil has caused the minimum retail price to go up as it's on a percentage.

    http://auto.howstuffworks.com/gas-price1.htm
Some other info on how the price is broken down.

Even if the stations are making $.30 a gallon or more in WI ATM, if it's caused by the minimum pricing laws that require them to mark it up $.30 a gallon you honestly can not blame them.

Big Oil is the one making the record profits, percentage based or not.
