    Friend

keyword research is the first step in SEO

Second is the content for your site

Third step is on page optimization like Title tags, H1, H2 headings, image optimization, internal URL structure with proper anchor text etc..

after that you can start off page optimization with your targeted keywords.

try to use social bookmarketing submissions, article marketing , dofollow forums and some quality directory submissions etc.

also you can do link baiting techniques with fresh and interesting content.

why not try to read some useful Guide of SEOMOZ ,

    seomoz.org/article/beginners-guide-to-search-engine-optimization

    Good luck

The steps mentioned by you are off page initiatives. The first step will be to start with on page work and then graduate to off page.

The first and most important step of any seo campaign should be thorough keyword research. You need to find keywords that both has people searching for it and is not so competitive that you couldn't beat the websites already ranking for that keyword. I like to make a spreadsheet with all of my keywords sorted by category and search volume. Then throughout the seo process I can refer to that spreadsheet to decide which keywords to target. Once you rank well for your initial 'easy' keywords you can move onto some more competitive terms.

If you are brand new to seo, there would be a step even before keyword research. That is reading up on seo and learning everything you can. If you jump into seo headfirst without proper knowledge, your efforts will be less effective and could do more harm than good.

The first step will be to fill out for each page in the site, a <title> with your targeted keyword phrase.

SEO is divided into on-page and offpage. Add title, meta descriptions, alternative text in images are in the on-page. The link exchange, article submission, PR submission, Directory submission, blogging, forum participation, social bookmarking submission are the part of off-page optimization. If you want to work more then regularly participate here, ask question and read the reply of others.

    Sameer,
If you make a search on Google with the Keyword you will find a lot of ebooks and reading material about how you can do SEO

I feel this is a good material. Also if you make a search on Digital Points with the keyword you would see that there are many articles providing ample knowledge and some written by experts. There is also a blog by Matt Cutts from Google (which you can find on Google with keyword "Matt Cutt blog")where he has provided some valuable knowledge do visit that.

    Thanks

There are too many SEO strategies to mention and considering you don't really know what you want I would suggest reading the forums or using Google. It really depends on the type of site you have, how you plan to monetize it, and what your goals are.
