Christmas is not far away and spending on the internet goes absolutely mad at this time of year. For the newcomers here and I notice that there are lot of newcomers to CJ, at least by the number of new ID’s here on the forum so these humble words are for them. I am by no means an expert but I have seen a couple of seasons now in affiliate marketing and there are some simple things that you can do to increase your chances of making some money. Its almost too late now to get a new site up and ready for December. You need to act NOW. There is nothing new here at all, its all basic stuff, as I said mainly for the newcomers. In no particular order: Get your site indexed, easy, use your sig link, put your site in a directory, stumble it, dig it. If you have a blog, get some SEO plugins, just google seo plugins and you’ll find them they can be very powerful. Capitalise on how people come to your site, look at your awstats and use the keywords/keyword phrases from your stats to make just one logical and unique sentence and add it as content on your site. Bold your keywords if you can do so without it appearing stupid. Try to add just one unique meaningful sentence or phrase each week to your site, one its not too hard. Mask those affiliate links Get rid of your 404 etc errors. Create a sitemap for your site, just google sitemap generator Create a robots file for your site, just google it. Make sure your landing page loads quickly - get rid of those large graphics google cannot index graphics but can index alt test - label your images Test your affiliate links – do they take you to the correct page and more importantly do you see the clicks in your reports. Make sure your title page has your keyword (s) in it Make sure your meta description is meaningful and has your keyword (s) in it Make sure that your content (you’d better have content!) has your keyword (s) in it at least once and bolded if possible. An easy way to get content is put a rss news feed on a page, relevant to your niche, easy to set up – but don’t use javascript as it will not get spidered. This will bring new content each day. Double check that your affilate links take people to somewhere that is relevant to what they were looking for. You need targeted traffic and lots of clicks. Obvious I know but if someone is searching for ipods don’t take them to a MP3 download link, close match I know but not 100% targeted. Don’t scrape or copy other sites content, google will penalize you. Create oyour own, not too hard or pay someone on dp $20 and they can write it for you. This is all easy stuff. You don’t need the best site on the net, you just need one a percentage point better than the next guy. Like the old story of two guys trying to outrun a lion on the African plains, John pulls out his running shoes from his backpack, Sean said that’s no use you’ll never outrun the lion, John says I don’t have to, I just need to outrun you! Exactly the same with your site, you just need a little edge. This is by no means a complete list or a new list, just a “brain dump†as I was working on mine for the Christmas season. PLEASE those more experienced add to this list. Best of luck and start getting ready NOW.
Find new products that will be released in Nov/Dec, create 'preemptive' pages for these products NOW Double check your CJ email and pending offers, make sure that your advertisers don't have any updated TOS you need to agree to Validate your site, and make sure your site works properly in all the major browsers This is something we should all be doing constantly, not just at Xmas. There are many tools to help with optimising your website. This is a simple, quick one that can help you get your keywords right http://www.websitegrader.com/
Great post, thanks for that. Open source software is often shoddy in terms of SEO. Wordpress for example, requires a robots.txt to get it indexed properly and you should also throw in noindex on a lot of pages ('category', '/page/' urls usually). Thats one thing will kills blogs attempting to get up the serps with CJ product posts sometimes.
