Then why do you suppose that so many people prefer to take the public route, orlady?

With all due respect (oh wait... that's none), this claim is about as credible as the one that states that the only people who criticize DMOZ practices are disgruntled webmasters who can't get DMOZ listings for their own sites.

The only difference in your use of the canned response is that yours was modified to use the word "most" instead of "all". Under the circumstances, that's as close to an admission that editors are fired for speaking out as we're ever going to get.

No they are not the same. It would be like calling a lawyer a legal clerk.

Lets say that I know one. Why on gods green earth would I want to report them to a system I already believe is corrupt, just so Dmoz can have something else to sweep under the rug.

No orlady, blogs, forums, media and other agencies are the best way to go. This is not just a few of us on DP who believe that Dmoz is a playground for editors only. I would invite you to take a hard look around the internet, to see what your peers think of Dmoz. I say these are your peers because they are the ones who truly created Dmoz.

Even the founder of Dmoz told Danny Sullivan in an interview that Dmoz has no use anymore. We all understand though why so many of you wish to hang on to the last little threads of the directory. Your numbers are down and most of the directory is outdated.

You have editors who are smart enough to keep their editorship but still expose the internal workings of Dmoz. This IMHO will be your downfall.

The time is coming, Dmoz will either fade off gracefully or be carried off forcefully through public outcry, legal avenues or through govermental investigation.

Elementary, my dear minstrel. Because taking the public route is far more effective at feeding the egos of the whiners and professional forum trolls who choose that route. :D

Regarding "realtor" vs. "real estate agent".... as I would expect any U.S. real estate professional to know, "realtor" is a registered trademark owned by an organization that says it should not be used generically.

Recognizing that the National Association of REALTORS® is very persnickety about the use of "realtor" (see http://www.realtor.org/rmomag.nsf/pages/lawoct04),
dmoz discourages its use in all site listings, except when it is part of the official name of a business or organization.

No. Sorry. Not the correct answer.

It's because DMOZ had years to do what needs to be done and failed to show any interest in doing their duty. Now, finally, we're seeing some small changes and, whatever the spin of the day from DMOZ editors may be, that is entirely and wholly attributable to a critical mass of negative publicity that got the DMOZ inner sanctum worried that they might actually be called to account and/or closed down entirely by their owners.

You disappoint me, orlady. I didn't really expect more of you but I suppose at one time there was a faint hope - obviously totally unjustified.

I know this and tried to explain or should I say argue the point with some of your metas on Resouceless Zone. If you know this to be so then why do the editors continue to list in the descriptions using the word Realtor when in fact some of those are not. By the Way it CANT be used in a business name either without permission from NAR. Usually only the local associations get to use that trademark in their business name.

I know that NAR, where I have a contact with one of the attorneys who heads up the trademark violation division told me that NAR was looking to file suit against Dmoz/AOL for trademark violations.

See orlady we are not all dumb as some of you editors believe. There are plenty of irons in the fire so to speak that any one of them will put Dmoz out of business.
