Wow, Sitepoint really does suck

I've heard a lot of bitching about sitepoint and I've even defended them a few times because I've never had any problems there.
So tonight I make the infrequent journey into their SEO forum(infrequent because it's mostly crap) and I see this thread with the title "Let's get something very clear here". The title alone sounds like a mother scolding a unruly child. In the thread a moderator named hawk mocks some of the users over there referring to them as "experts"(in a sarcastic, mocking way) and tries to correct them aobut some falsehoods they've been spreading by pointing out a sticky FAQ thread.

I replied saying that I thought threads like that were mostly pointless and usually self serving, so that someone can openly mock others lack of knowledge while making themselves look like an authority. I really wasn't any more nasty about it than that.

I got an infraction from the ***hole and he removed my post and sent me some sort of rant that I'm not supposed to say things like that in public because it undermines his authority and keeps the forum from "running smoothly". WTF?
You mock your own users in public but I have to be critical of you for it in secret?

So I replied to the thread and said that I shouldn't have gotten an infraction and that the post shouldn't have been deleted, that caused a bunch more private messages that were full of s*** excuses. I asked to appeal the infraction to other staff but he said that because I posted a reply about it in the thread that the infraction would stand. What a crock of shit. DP moderators, you do a good job here, if you want to keep doing a good job just use sitepoint as a model of how NOT to run a site.

this is common among large forums/sites. As forums grow, they attract 1,000's of personalities. Some will be stronger than others. What the site owner hopes for is having less strong/egoistic personalities.

I don't know much about them. I've just used them to sell. Sold a site for $5,000 a few months ago the next day I posted it for sale over there :) </brag>

As for that moderator. He didn't want to be schooled on a forum that he "moderates".

I hate most moderators on most forums I visit. Only a handful are ok.

Most of sitepoint seems OK but the SEO forum seems to have a lot of condescending moderators. It's not just that one post that caused me to post that response.

Me too. Except DP and I'm not kissing ass. I barely know who any moderators are here. They just blend in for the most part.

    Couple of things:
    1) HAWK is a she, not a he
    2) The 'Rant' was aimed at the numbnuts who read a paper and think they know it all, the same ones who will tell you point blank that black is white and white is green - because they read it on the internet - so it must be true.
    3) She wasnt railing on you directly so why take offense?
    4) Every Forum has a hierarchy - if it didnt then it would fail miserably. HAWK is a Team Leader and so is in a position of authority. If you have a problem with that - Dont visit Sitepoint.

If you are not allowed to have an opinion, maybe they should get rid of the forum, and change it to a regular website with no posting capabilities. That way hawk's views on SEO would be the only views on SEO, and they would not suffer the dangerous menace of other people contributing to the discussion or having different viewpoints on SEO.

Because she was being condescending and when I pointed it out I got an infraction. I noticed like the next day the title of the thread was changed to be less condescending, so somebody with mod powers must have thought so too.
Anyway, I started this thread here just to vent because I had absolutely no recourse at sitepoint. I couldn't talk about the infraction in any way with anyone except the person who gave it to me, which was obviously useless since she was biased. So I posted a rant here and felt better. Then I let the thread fade away. I don't see why you felt the need to bump a month old thread spikez, because you are a mod there?

The main reason I think I took offense to the post the moderator made at sitepoint is because the moderators over there in the SEO forum have a history of being condescending.

Many months ago I took exception to a sitepoint mod who posts here also, when he started one of his posts with "No offense, but this is far from the best place to find SEO experts. "
He then went on to post a link to the sitepoint SEO FAQ.

    Here's the thread: http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=798254

    It's the second post.

It bothers me because these "experts" which are being condescending to everyone, really haven't demonstrated that they are experts at all. They just go around repeating stuff from well known FAQs and stuff that they've picked up from other places. They recite things like they are reading them from a manual.(actually they sort of are)

The thread was clearly designed to belittle people who claim to have more experience and knowledge than they have(numbnuts, as you call them, spikez). The moderator even told me this in private, that they have been getting a lot of complaints about garbage posts over there, so they're trying to keep them under control. But the tone of the thread could have been much more constructive and it could have been done without making the mod look like THE authority, which I don't think she is at all.

There was also another moderator in the seo forum over there who had a reputation for the same thing. I forget his name, but the point is, that it seems to be woven into culture of that forum. I should have never posted there(I mean the SEO forum, the rest of sitepoint seems fine) in the first place and I haven't since and won't again.
