Am I being stupid? Or is it ok to:

    >> Choose a niche (baby products for example)
    >> Start a niche baby products directory site
    >> Create pages for each of the advertisors
    >> Add the adverts on each page with some kind of review
    >> Drive targetted traffic towards the site

Can you do that with affiliate ads?? (excuse my newbieness) :)

In my opinion, directory type site is not a good place to start your own affiliate site. There are rarely peoples do search for any directory type site, even you get traffics from PPC - you will get less sales than any other types of site (reviews/blog/landing page)

yes you can but not recommended, because if you have a directory more or less just full of affiliate links google will penalize you for setting up a link farm and your traffic will be very hard to get. Also a thought, have you every purchased a product online from such a site?

The short answer is no, it's not an incredibly brilliant idea :D

It could work, but you'll need to add A LOT of unique content to each directory entry. Otherwise, as mcjp6 said, Google will spank you hard.

You'd be better off using Wordpress (or something similar) and creating an entire page (with good content) for each advertiser. At least you'll stand a chance of getting some organic search traffic, and with the right content, you might actually get a sale (which is the entire point!).

I've gotta stop using so many brackets.

:p :p I registered it and 'built it' one night when I wasted. I woke up and realized what I'd done... it's worth it just see the geo stats of who's clicking my sig link ;)

If you want to add a link to the exclusive SuggestMePlz directory (which may or may not eventually turn into a real PHPLD dir one day), then check out this magnificent thread.

[Sorry to take this thread further off topic]

Directories are not known for making money I would suggest an informational website or a blog on one subject.

I would suggest you to create a different page or column for each advertiser, and then write a quality content that sells. Make sure that the traffic is all unique and legit, so you wont be banned by google.

Peoples do rarely search on directory words, even if they do searched, they are not targeted and hardly to get them converted. Directory format also not friendly to make sales from affiliate. You have to have a graet content + targeted traffics to make money with affiliate but directory couldn't do. :)
