Need Help with my SERP

I am targeting a keyword phrase which is quite popular.

The first few results that i get when i search for it in google are those of epinions.com, shopping.com, amazon.com etc.

They all have PR 3-5 but have less than 10 backlinks.

Do you think i can be able to beat them by having some more backlinks (like 100-200) by directory submissions and article directories only??

    Thanks.

It would be better if you would try related forums posting, blog commenting and other kind of link building where you can use your keywords as anchor text.

This job is not easy and it takes a long time just for you to rank, but there are so many ways to get in to the top but DON'T rely/do on black hat...:D

Use that keyword in your anchor text and provide unique content for the landing page.

i agree its better to do forum posting and blog comment posting. Regarding directory submission, make sure to submit your website to directories with good PR and of course provide your visitors with good and updated content.

A couple of hundreds links will not do the trick. Beating the websites mentioned by you is difficult if not impossible. This is due to the fact that these website carry a strong weight with them, they are highly trusted by Google. For the same reason people build squidoo lenses because ranking those lenses are far easier that ranking a new domain.

You can also an experiment. Start a thread here and write an article with the same topic. Look for it in Google and you would notice that the DP thread would be well above any other site. Its not that your website is bad, its just not the league of DP.

    Thanks for the replies guyz.

Well, I think that they are beatable. I did some reasearch and found some great stuffs.

The phrase I am targeting is an instrument which is searched 40k times per month. and as i said the competitors are biggies.

But when i search for ipods and mp3 players then these biggies dont have that much ground.

Point to be noted: ipods and mp3 players are very popular term compared to the term I am targeting, and most have optimised their sites for ipods and mp3 players and have certainly beaten these biggies.

So if they can beat them for a competitive term then I can beat them too.

I just need to follow the practices that all you have advised to me.

    Thanks everyone. Again.

They are beatable, but 200 backlinks from directories will not do it. Keep in mind that Amazon's home page has PR9 and Google definitely takes in consideration when displaying SERPs.

Without knowing what your web site's URL is, it is very hard to say. The sites you are refering to are very large and SEOed.

    Is yours?
