Fantastico - Is it a Web Hosting Feature you Use?

I find fantastico to be incredibly useful and easy to set-up websites using the most popular free scripts out there today. Anyone else share my enthusiasm or are there some reasons why Fantastico is not something you use?

fantastico is not always up to date with the latest releases of the scripts so you could be installing a script with known security holes.

If you don't know enough to install the scripts from the command line then you probably shouldn't be using them...

I used it when I first got into the webmaster world, found it easy. But, as my webhost at the time didn't update scripts very well I found myself having to learn to install scripts myself to remain up to date.

Now that I am my own host, I didn't install fantastico. I don't use it anymore, and I'd rather not be burdened with the extra resources and something else to worry about keeping up to date.

It's useful for people that don't know how to install stuf manually. In the end, installing everything manually is better (upgrading etc), but it's good for "noobs".

I use the FormMail Clone. Their Poll setup was deplorable, so I just used a Wordpress Plugin.

The webhost I happen to use seems to be good about installing the updates and it's very easy for me to update scripts that go out of date with just 1 click.

I've used Installatron, which is the the Direct Admin control panel version of Fantastico. It works well the few times I've used it, but I'd rather install the latest versions myself.

Any Hostgator customers here? Can you comment on whether or not they keep Fantastico up to date for you?

Actually, I've learned that it's very easy to keep up to date and it can even be done automatically and effortlessly with a cron job.

If you don't care about having the absolute latest script version, it saves a heck of a lot of time.

But hey, I've gottent the Joomla installation down to minutes now, so I'm not worried

Actually, I've learned many hosts are quite good about keeping the latest version updated in Fantastico. Hostgator in particular seems to be a host that is ontop of this. Anyone know of other hosts that do well in keeping Fantastico up to date?

I have used Fantastico, in fact i've just installed CubeCart through it. Its very good espicially for "noobs" but I would'nt install PHP Nuke with it, I did that "manually" using 7.6 with updates as my gamers site was hacked the other week!!. If you are a noob then yes use it, but learn to install it manually its more fun! (I think!)

FYI as far as forum software goes I've noticed that Fantastico is good about updates for phpbb, but not so good about smf.

I love fantastico. It's a great idea and well written software, IMHO. However, there are still lots of open source scripts I would like to see integrated with it. I've made some suggestions, but nothing has happened so far...

Yes, I often use it as well. Although I can install WordPress (for example) from scratch quickly and easily it is handy to simply fill in a couple items and be done with it. It is also a handy place to review options for new scripts. For example, I wanted to add some polls and there are so very many options out there you could spend days simply testing and installing. I simply tested the few options offered through Fantastico. Found one I liked and it all took less than an hour.
