Every kind of free marketing i tried was completely useless...
I think all traffic maker websites are so full that an individual without money trying to advertise has no chance to stand among the crowd :)

for free marketing to be good you have to have a good unique offering

unique offering? does that even exist anymore? :)
Let me see then, new stuff...

the plans for a working time machine.
    anti-matter pro pulser.
    the worm hole locater/traveler.
Wireless energy conductors (you dont have to post wires anymore to have power)

unique offering is great...too bad is science fiction only ;)

I'm afraid you are not far off, Clades.

The bigs sites are big mainly through advertising, not with "free methods."

The good news is that they did it, so can you.

Article marketing and video marketing seem to work well for many. Takes a lot of time and work so I don't know if you can really call it "free". Anyway, the point is there is no such thing as a free lunch.

A unique offereing doesn't have to be a unique product.

Yes free advertising can work. Does it always, no. Of course since it is free you can't expect a lot and it takes time. Are you doing the right things? Are you doing them in the right way? Are you doing them consistently and long enough to have effect?

I am assuming you have a web site you are trying to advertise. Free promotion will take some time and effort. (by the way nothing is free, the time it takes to do the "Free" advertising has value). I didn't feel my efforts were paying off but gradually I started comming up higher in Google searches and recently Got Page Rank.

Keep at it and good luck,

Some of them really are useless. Like I have never understood the point of TrafficSwarm, where you just get lots of other webmasters desperate for traffic visiting your site for 3 seconds. What's the point?!

Create something original, build it up yourself - that's gotta be the long-term solution.

Most of the people here have done well from using pretty much all free marketing. Blogs / craigslist / articles / directories etc...

That is to say, that the tools they used to gain #1 in SERPS have come from free sites. Video marketing etc is becoming much more popular and can generate some decent leads - it just depends on how well you do something.

I use free and paid forms of marketing, but almost
exclusively free methods. It works, but IMO, you
really need to know the "ins and outs" of proper
keyword research and how to use the keywords
to be able to generate a lot of valuable traffic to
    your site/s.

the reason your free marketing was useless is probably because:

    A. It wasn't focused to target audience
    B. It appeared as spam and was removed
    C. You didn't place your material on high quality, popular, traffic, websites with lots of backlinks.

Answer: If you do it right, it does work... and to tell the truth it works better than any paid advertising will ever work... Free advertising can be tricky, but see no "free" place out there is actually offering what helps besides ME. I know this is self promo, but it's on topic and I'm going to take time to give you information that can help you with free advertising.

Step one-- find targeted audience through relevancy (similar topics of websites)

Step two--- find websites that are statistically ranking better than your site with more inbound links

STep three-- dillgently work you way through the as much as possible, the more the better.. But be sure to keep your postings not spammy otherwise you might get counted against by search engines

Step four--- Patience.. Marketing is only planting the seed--- you need to have quality content that serves a purpose to gain a steady flow of traffic. If you can target this purpose to a function of the internet rather than a facet or niche, you site will be even stronger.

    :) Enjoy:cool:

Uhhh, folks, he is probably talking about getting quality traffic, and enough to pay his bills.

Any dumbass can get traffic. 2 people is "traffic."

I dont think receiving traffic that dies after some days/hours...is any decent traffic at all...It means you will spend the rest of your life recreating a stupid temporary traffic over and over. Maybe is what you all do?
ALSO, you need to have already decent traffic to generate hits/reputation over the "traffic builder" websites, so its hopeless if you don't have anything to start with.
ALSO internet is full of scammers that get any oportunity to associate any website content with dirty keywords that have nothing to do with your bussines, even if you get any traffic most part of the times it has nothing to do with you, so this free traffic thing has "hopeless" written all over ;)

Paying bills? Oh my, if i was depending on internet to pay me anything...i would be dead by now...

Oh yes, i'am being optimist here...extremely optimist and realist.

Absolutley not useless. You go to Google and type in "Keygen crack code" and you see a youtube video outranking all the other websites that are focused on keygens and cracks. Over 30,000 views in 3 months.

Frankly, statements like this just make me shake my head.

What REALLY happened is that what YOU did was ineffective for you.

And I'm going to be really blunt here. To come away from that experience and say that "it" was useless demonstrates that you haven't taken the time to truly study what it is that you are doing.

I make my living online and I have for several years, now.
I use a combination of free marketing tools and paid marketing tools.
Both are effective when used properly.

There is a saying I like to refer back to that goes like this:

"It's a poor musician that blames his instrument".

If the free marketing you did was ineffective, instead of dismissing "free marketing" take the time to analyze what you did and find out what wasn't working.

    Start with your offer.
    Look at your headline.
    Look at the copy itself.
Did you use a strong enough call to action?
(Did you even use a call to action?)
    Was the offer believable?
Were you advertising in the right market for your offer?
Did you test different versions of the ad?
Did you test different versions of the copy?
Did you test different call to action lines?

If you didn't do AT LEAST these things, you aren't ready to say whether or not the free marketing worked. All you really know is that what you tried didn't work.

I started my online career with free marketing strategies.
I put in a lot of hours (The true cost of "free").
I tested every thing I did and tracked the results.
I made changes along the way and tracked results.
As I started getting sales, I started spending some of the profits on paid advertising.

To put it bluntly: It's not the instrument. It's the musician.

Take the time to learn your craft.
    Learn to do it well.

I don't think that free internet marketing is useless. If you have the right resources and mindset and you be able to make something out of it!
