We are using Local search for Cities in the USA. And we rank very well for that. We also, setup Google Local Search thru Google Webmaster Tools.

Another way is language and Character Set, but I have no real experience with that yet.

The format we are using is <title> Keyword phrase : Other keyword phrases - CityName State</title>

Others are using <title> CityName Keyword phrase : Other keyword phrases </title>

I don't know what the above poster is talking about, considering your talking about country specific search results, I'd just ignore him.

There are quite a few different ways to target SERPs geographically, I'll list out the ways to do it and the best methods how to, best of luck.

    1. Use a cc-TLD (country coded), this means use a domain extension for the country your trying to rank in. For example, Australia is *.au or United Kingdom is *.uk

    2. If #1 isn't an option and you have a *.com, *.net, etc you can set geographical targeting inside of Google Webmasters Central, you "cannot" set this if you have a cc-TLD as it is done automatically.

    3. Write the content in the natural language and grammar aspects of that specific region.

    4. Build backlinks from that geographical area, if your trying to rank in Google UK you'd obviously want backlinks from the UK and sites using the *.co.uk domain extension.

It's called Geographical Targeting, not local search.

I would agree with all of the above, though I would also add that other important things to consider is where the hosting is geographically located and also the location of the domain registrar.

As Sandecki said, the most important factor is using the local TLD, though if this isn't an option then you should be able to get around this by buying through a local domain registrar and also hosting the domain on a host located in the region.

Also give the webmaster tools a shot, though I haven't had time yet to test to see if this overrides other factors.

If you have a local TLD you can normally get away with hosting elsewhere. I have .co.uk domains hosted in the US that are picked up in google.co.uk
