What if google changed their name? What would happen? How would they go about a domain name change? Is it even possible?

If they did change it, what would they change it to?

    I like g

    g.com

sounds better to me, less typing..

if they redirected everyone from google.com it wouldn't matter

if google.com displayed a 404 page, no one would know outside of the webmaster community for a while and Yahoo and MSN would pick up the majority of searches.

well instead of 404 error page google.com could be redirected to yahoo.com or msn.com. that should be a nasty fun for a while

but what about the servers all over the world being redirected? Wouldn't this take more than just code? Upgraded hardware? I know it was a random question, but I think it should be addressed. A website with 370 million backlinks is very impressive, and to redirect that would be somewhat of a task. I don't think a quick redirect page would handle it. I'm saying, the internet could theoretically crash. Imagine all of the dead end links, wouldn't it just po average users to the point of not even wanting to deal with it?

This is far out, but hang in with me...

when you type in google.com, it is a pleasing pattern if you use the home row method. by typing g.com; it produces the same harmonious flow but quicker, increasing the over all amount of hits to the site because it will take the viewer LESS time to get there. That is why google should change their domain to G--- also, being less characters it would take up a reasonable amount of less space in all servers and cut cost of operations, links, and so forth. Being that they already started with google about 10 years ago, this is relatively new and they could still change over and be okay. But what would the hardware requirements be???? The massive change would take some major hardware changes to redirect all of the traffic. It would even out within a couple of years as everyone would be forced to adjust as google is the mainstay. However, if they did not have the proper equipment to handle the redirect requests, the entire internet could become rendered partially inoperable causing a downfall in internet useage until the adjustment period has taken place, as google is the "center" of the 3d model web and interlinks the majority of websites. Yahoo also shares this power, and if either one were to "fail" both would be doomed. Yin and yang. haha

more positves to G.com is that the site would be worth more now because its shorter :)

    ;-)

Google have a recognised brand name that has taken time to build. Why would they want to change their name and lose the branding?
