Will .TEL Domains Change The Way We Socialize?

Discussion in 'Domain Names' started by tankard, Aug 21, 2008.

It would be interesting to start a discussion about .TEL domain name - the first one that would hold data directly in DNS (domain name system).

You could use it to publish/share your contact details on a standardized page without having to code a website and without having to host it.

There is this interview with TelNic Communications Director.

What do you think? Are you looking forward to register yourname.tel?

Won't be touching this TLD with a 10000ft pole.

TLD mania with the registry lately...

    (assuming it gets approved)

It is already approved and the Sunrise period starts officially on December 3rd, 2008!

My opinion is that in .TEL case it doesn't matter what domain name you grab - it is a new kind of communications model. Don't look at it from the domainer's point of view (yes, you probably won't be able to make money on TEL through re-selling)

If it is for personal use, you will have more fun and be better connected with your friends and family.

If it is for business, you will be generating more sales leads, you will be able to create a dynamic community with your partners and employees.

I'm sorry, but how many darn new extensions are getting released these days. There's all this hype, people spend some money, then the extension fails

They said the same thing about .mobi and see where it is now! MOBI names are selling for $100,000 and more...

However, .TEL is not for re-selling. It meant for using.

No it's not. It is the next big thing :) It is a new concept and sometimes things get popular only because of their novelty. At least this is how I feel, let's wait until March next year to see who's right!

hahahaha a mobi supporter lecturing us on how .tel will be great?
1 off sale of flowers.mobi and then a tank of values which have never even come close to again. .mobi failed, .tel will fail just like every new gTLD, failure is the only way it can go. Not to mention, it's a silly idea to begin with.

Come on, Kevin! I ain't no mobi supporter. I support Chelsea :D

Flowers you say? How about this:

    ringtones.mobi - $145,000 (hey, ringtones.org sold for only $120,000)
    porn.mobi - $110,000
    realestate.mobi - $85,000
    dating.mobi - $73,000
    tickets.mobi - $60,000
    shopping.mobi - $55,000
    bank.mobi - $51,000
    property.mobi - $26,000
    broadway.mobi - $17,000
    hollywood.mobi - $16,000
    banks.mobi - $12,000

and many many more. In fact, it is estimated that more than 100 mobi domains has been sold for more than $10,000

But I know why you don't love mobi - because dotMobi holds all the 5,516 premium domains!!!

Can you stop thinking as a domainer for a moment and think in Web 2.0 terms? Interactivity and Integrity!!!

And then can we prevent new TLDs from appearing? Almost all sensible domain names are gone already so prepare yourselves for more and more new TLDs (and majority of them will fail, I agree...)

Can you stop thinking like a web2,0 preacher and think like a rational human being?

Ringtones, the absolute BEST domain in .mobi ONLY got 120k. There is no product or service which would be more applicable to .mobi than ringtones and the sale was a pittance. Besides, most of those are older sales. .com buttons, no real advertising, it's a worthless extension just like .tel will become. Just like the long list of wanna-bes: biz, info, pro, travel, museum, whtever other junk im forgetting and could care less about.

Why would anyone need .mobi to have interactivity?
    mobile.domain.com
    domain.com/mobile
using good ol' fashion technology to read browser infomation and identify mobile browsers and present them a mobile page at domain.com.

There is no reason for a .mobi to exist and pretending there is... well is foolish hope.

Only one tld id like to see introduced, and im keeping that quiet. Im pretty sure someone will do it anyway, if I come up with 100k id be all over it. But see thats what it takes to get a new tld, not a great idea, the idea is irrelevant, just money...always the money.

Nerz, if you think yours is a good idea then go for it. New TLDs will be introduced anyway. So why not you?

You don't have to own 100k, you need to convince investors.

If the prominent domainers have it their way, we may end up with endless TLDs.

In which case, I would see absolutely NO POINT in getting anything other than a .com/.net/.org or stretch myself to an occasional .in/.co.uk - but thats about it.

If the traffic loss - prevention system comes about - all these seemingly exotic TLDs are gonna be crap even before they're approved.
