Hi - I have been led to believe that a site may suffer some sort of penalty if it has a high number of inbound links from what are described as bad neighbourhoods. I dispute this as I believe the worst that can happen is that links from disreputable sites will simply be ignored. If that was not the case we would all be able to 'trash' competitor sites simply by establishing a high number of links to them from porn/viagra/gambling/spamming/warez sites and the like. Opinions and experiences related this would be very interesting to hear - Many Thanks
links should come from only relevent and good sites. so if you are getting links from relevent sites its good chance to improve ranking of website in serp.
When a bad neighborhood links to you then that's okay. But if you link to a bad neighborhood, then there may be a problem. I do not believe that you will receive penalty if they link to you. If it does, then all would just submit their competitors to bad neighborhoods and it would be one grueling marketing game. You can't control those that link to you. So you will not receive penalty for that. But you can control who you link to.
Even if you find a bad neighbourhood linking to you, simply pop their webmaster a message asking him to remove the link..
Hi seoscout I totally agree with you bcz i was also wondering about this some days back when i read a post somewhere stating that it is a myth. So i think there is no penalty for it. It is just that your ranking may go down because of irrelevant links.
obviously bad neighbor will hurt your rank. you need to find out it and removed them from your site and your site from their site.
We can't do nothing about the incoming links (as google also knows)... so, no problem with it. The problem is if you have outgoing links to illegal sites.
