I think you can but your site needs to be for non profit. It has never worked for me so I would say its rare.

I sort of got listed by Yahoo dir. I submitted to Yahoo UK & Ireland, but got listed in Yahoo Local somehow.

I don't know if this works with other countries though, so it may be worth it to keep trying a few more times first before paying the $299. But I don't think that fee is worth it just for a general directory listing, a featured spot yes, but not a standard entry.

I've not heard of anyone getting for a while. Back in the day it was free for everyone and sites already in the directory got grandfathered when they started charging. lucky bastards.

Yes, as hecto says, if your website is non commercial then you can submit if for review.

I've tried submitting a few of my sites with free review (well over a year ago) with nice descriptions etc but well, no listing in the directory... damm, but oh well.

Awhile back (a year or so) I submitted a deeplink and also suggested a second category in the additional information field - it was listed in both topical categories. So as far as I know, they may still be accepting submissions.

Tip - I doubt you'll get in if it's in a category that's well represented. Both of the categories I suggested the site to still have less than a full page of listings.

Anyone tried Yahoo canada in the meantime? Is it free? Does it accept non-canada sites?

Like CReed said, you'll only get in if its submitted to a tight niche category.

There was a guy on DP a while back that claimed submitting to the regional versions of Yahoo! directory got you in for free. Dunno if it still works.

Anyone notice that the submit yahoo.ca and yahoo.com is the same url? - I was attempting to submit to canada, however, noticed that it was the same. Any suggestions on whether it is the same?

Yes. The URL is the same, it's just appended with the regional directory location.

It's always been my impression that all of the submission go to the same DB for review on the .com side of things.

My feeling is they just want your $300, and if they are feeling generous, then you might get in for free.

But expect to pay for a big fat zero guarantee of a listing in Yahoo dir. Is it criminal - hell yes, but not much you can do about it, so my advice be move on elsewhere.

I think that guy was me. :)

Getting listed in Yahoo Dir for free may be abused to the point of no hope. But the OP can check my sig for a detailed explanation on how I submitted commercial sites for free.

I submitted using your post as reference for the process. A couple sites from different niches.

Mainly just to see if it would actually work. I think you're right about the abuse of it. Yahoo may be on to it as I am still not approved there.
