I have just purchased a domain for directory and would be thankful if some experienced person could guide me which script is best for directory listing.

    Would be grateful to him.

Whatever script is best for you. There are many. Search DP and Google.

Despite what many say around here, there really is no one "best script" - each of them has their good and bad points. Lay out your directory on paper and develop your concept. Decide what features, pages and information you want to include. Then start looking at the scripts, their features and the difficulty in making each script conform to your vision and use that to make your decision.

If you already have your concept, explain as much as you wish to reveal here and you will get more detailed and useful answers to your question. Also read through these forums as this question has been asked a number of times before and you may find the answers in those threads.

James - just out of curiousity - could you give me 3 quick simple points of why a "directory" is important to have on your website?

    Thanks

phpLinkDirectory Script has a lot of features than you can ever imagine and you can as well ask them to customize it to suit your individual needs. And they have a plenty of MODs at their disposal to enhance your custom requests. You really need to try it to confirm and it's so cheap. Great support team to go with it!

I've always used PHPLD and haven't had any problems with it. However there are a lot of different scripts out their and some are better depending on what you need in a directory.

    Just as another option :)
Please take a look at the link in my signature.
But as others have said, check out which one has the features you need.

I myself have used PHPLD on a myriad of niche and general directories in the past. Recently, took in a huge client of over 230 site submissions to Featured category. So, the business isn't dead. Just get a script that you can afford and possibly start out with free version. When you feel comfortable then venture into the paid script and move on from there.

I've had good luck with both phpLD and Gossamer Links. GL's static html pages always do better with Google PR for me than phpLD's dynamic pages. The GL sites are all 3s and 4s while phpLD sites are all 2s and 3s. And maybe it's just because the GL sites are older.

Of course there is a huge difference in price!
