Smarty Templates

Could someone please explain smarty templates to me? And say I made a .psd in Photoshop, could I easily convert it to conform with the smarty templates requirements?

In a nutshell smarty allows you to keep the code out of the Display.

You have your php side where you process and gather data - you then hand that data off the smarty and display it as you wish.

The idea being that I can have a site that uses smarty - I can take that smarty template give it to a designer and they can make changes w/ out ever having to worry about code.
