I think each registrar has a different process. You will have to normally initiate the transfer from where you want to transfer the domain to. They will give you the steps required. My experience from another registrar is to pay for one year of registration but the remaining months from where you want to transfer it from will get carried over. Check on the "Domain Transfer Guide" of your new registrar to find out applicable fees.

GoDaddy usually charge $6.99 for .com transfers, but that price also extends the domain registration for 1 year. Other domains may have other charges. I don't think my GoDaddy codes (in my sig) work with transfers, but might be worth a try.

Any time you transfer from one registrar to another, you incur fees.
The fees usually cover one year of additional domain registration - as mentioned by other posts, the fee with Godaddy is currently $6.99 + $0.20 ICANN fee.

Might I say, I think you are taking the right step in having your domain name registered separately from your web hosting. This will make things less complicated should you ever decide to drop one service but keep the other.
