Some people just can't take constructive critisism

I was emailed a few days ago by someone who was asking me about off-site seo (so link building, etc) and how to increase the amount of visitors who stay on the site instead of bouncing. So I visit his site expecting a nice layout, professionally designed, I was very wrong. The site used marquee's and flashing text, there was way too much going on at once, and this was only the homepage i'd visited so far.

So I replied to him saying that he shouldn't be worrying about off-site SEO at the moment, first concentrate with on-site SEO and a professional site re-design which in turn would most likely increase the amount of visitors who stay on the site. I pointed out a few things on the site that are bad and that there was too much going on at once which was probably why he had such a high bounce rate.

    He didn't reply.

Maybe he's taken it into consideration and hired a designer, but I doubt it.

Anyone else get things like this happen often?

NOTE: I'd rather keep the site confidential.

If someone asks for your opinion and you give it honestly, great. Why put that here? Are you that cool?

You're just trying to promote your SEO knowledge perhaps?

It's been 3-4 days now, I don't expect him to be replying, but my expectations have been wrong before, so i'll see.

They emailed me about it as they are a friend of a friends cousin or something like that, and my mates cousin knows that I know a bit about web design + SEO, and told him to email me.

People feel uncomfortable with any of their dark sides when pointed by someone else. So just chill buddy because those people are jerks and nothing can be done for them.

This happens a lot. People change dramatically once someone is criticizing them or their work.

Constructive criticism is a wonderful thing, though. It's very useful and essential to making some work well. As long as you didn't tell him what you did with malicious intent, or with the agenda of discouraging him from continuing his work, you're fine.

Some people also try to abuse the constructive criticism program - when they know they have something that is fantastic, they claim to think it's terrible, and ask for advice. All they get is compliments, therefore boosting their very low self esteem.

Now, you mentioned marquees and flashing text - what's wrong with that? Marquees are the future, my friend. ;) =P

My cousin is an architect. He is the only person I know who takes criticism in his stride.
    I asked him why?
Its because for 7 years when he was training, they did "crits" all the time, i.e. they would design a piece of work, put thier heart & soul into it and then the other students and teachers would pull it apart at the "crit".
Maybe we all need to be trained to deal with criticism appropriately
