I Need Help: Moving from Shared Host to VPS

Discussion in 'Site & Server Administration' started by Bohol, Aug 15, 2008.

  1. #1
I just upgraded my account to VPS. The problem is that the host left the transferring/upgrading process to me.

Now, I don't have any idea how to do it. I upgraded because they suspended by shared server account due to excessive use of host resources.

How long will it take to move files to VPS? How shall I start this process? Thanks for helping.

How big is your site? Are you using any control panels such as cPanel, Plesk, etc on shared hosting and VPS?

On a shared hosting, I am using cPanel. On the VPS, the host has installed a default Plesk panel.

It would have been much easier to do the transfer from cpanel to cpanel. Other then manually doing the transfer, I have no idea for quick restore from cpanel to plesk.

You'll probably need to grab everything separately: files & databases, and then re-create your mailboxes manually and other features. I doubt there is any other way. Possibly, grab a full cPanel backup then untar it on the VPS and copy it out from there (i.e. the homedir and sql dumps).

    Hi Jay,

The host says I just need to copy the public_html files and upload then to the VPS server with Plesk installed as default control panel.

Do you have any databases? If not, the the home directory is all you need.

You'll need to get a dump of each database, copy the home directory (public_html), recreate the databases on your VPS and import the tables. Pretty annoying to do. You really should have got a cPanel VPS ;)

Here are the steps you have to follow.

did you ask your vps provider for cpanel? If it is installed, point your browser to https://ip.address:2087 or http://ip.address:2082/

    1. Do you know SSH? Download putty and login as root and connect to your server and see whats there

    2. If it is a fresh VPS server then you might want to buy a cpanel license and set it up in your VPS.
    3. You have to transfer all the cpanel accounts (from shared host) to your new VPS by means of SCP (secure file transfer). Go to cpanel > backup > select scp. This is the easiest way
    4. Dont forget to install a firewall in your new vps.

If you have cpanel license you can restore your sites quickly, else you might want to consider server control panels like directadmin, plesk etc..

If you dont want to buy cpanel, you have to prepare your server for LAMP (Linux+Apache+MySQL+PHP) along with FTP and mailserver. It isnt that easy unless you are a professional. You may also want to hire a server administrator.

Do you have experience with Plesk? Also with SMF database? Both my files and databases will be transferred. Total sites are less than 15.
