It is virtually impossible for any US citizen to have a balanced idea of world events

................it is virtually impossible for any US citizen to have a balanced idea of world events. The citizens of the USA are being misinformed, lied to and made clowns of by their own media...........

LA Times: A classic example of Disinformation

The piece “Stand up to Russia............ http://www.latimes.com/news/opinion/la-oe-boot12-2008aug12,0,2132727.story

........... the most absurd claims one could expect to find. Is it the LA hard Times, or what? Paragraph after paragraph of lies, fabrications and insults more befitting of a latrine wall, written by some demented retard with his own excrement, than in the pages of what I thought (until last night) was a reputable publication. I mean, what an eye opener.

Max Boot calls Russia’s crossing into Georgia a violation of international law. So what does he have to say about the USA’s act of criminal agression and mass murder in Iraq? What does he have to say about the deployment of WMD in civilian areas? What does he have to say about the massacre of hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians? What does he have to say about the concentration camp at Guantanamo, which brings back flashes of Belsen, Treblinka and Dachau, or the innumerous concentration and extermination camps in the Baltic States?

Nothing. The Georgian massacre of two thousand Russian civilians in one night, war crimes in which grenades were thrown into basements where women and children were huddling, tanks opening fire on old ladies, children being burned alive, are relegated to the word “details”. Details, eh? Yeah right, today a child, tomorrow a terrorist, so blast the crap out of him and get it done with. Is that what you teach as Senior fellow, Mr. Boot? Is that really how the people of the United States of America feel?
    ...................

Here is a man who calls for the West to unite against Russia and who claims that the Georgians should be supplied with anti-tank and AA-missiles.

As if there were not hundreds of American and Israeli advisors in Georgia who were routed along with their pupils, with their tails hanging between their legs. And while we’re at it, there is an investigation going on as to who perpetrated the war crimes. And a handful of missiles would have made a difference? If Russia were to use US military tactics, they would blast a hundred-metre crater around where the missiles were being fired from. Besides, Russia has enough precision missiles to neutralise and exterminate any military threat anywhere on Earth at any given moment, be this a matchbox, a tank or a concentration of troops, without even sending in one soldier.
    ....

US and western papers are caught by a clique of control-freaks, desperate not to let the truth get out and the result is Max Boot and his Stand up to Russia.

    More like a stand-up comedian.

Misinforming the American public is priority number 1 for most US governments.

That's why the public was at the beginning for the war on Iraq and now the public found out it was lied to.

What a democracy, you can't even get the truth out there, instead dirty political games which at the end the US public will pay for.

I actually support Russia. I want to see them get the USSR back together. Then the people with short memories and kids who don't remember the USSR will see what the typical behavior of a super power is.
Even after our invasion of Iraq, there is a reason that 90% of the west stands together with us 90% of the time.

We have to stand for peace and security.

But, we cannot have double standards and have peace and security!!!

I am 100% sure that Russians have more truth in their newspapers than US and Britain combined.
The American public is lied to much more than any other public in the world.

Guys, we have to understand one thing clearly.
We cannot have peace if we are the ones who start wars! We cannot have peace if we are supporting dictators and war criminals around the world. It is impossible.
Military corporations are making big money spending our tax money by starting wars, but at the end we the ordinary people lose.

That's why we have to demand from our government the Truth about all major world events so we can take morally right decision and thus avoiding costly mistakes.

Based on the Russian tradition of a free press for so many years how could you come to any other conclusion.

As an aside, I thought this was an interesting opinion . . .

    The roots of Russia's hostility

Playing chess against a Russian takes skill. The mess in Georgia is a good example. The Russians outplayed us.

Initially it looked like an easy win. When the USSR disintegrated Georgia sought to keep as wide a space as possible between it and Russia. The Georgians worked hard and generated growth rates as high as 12 percent a year. While not perfect, their democracy was a vast improvement over what had existed previously.

Russia was so weak, it couldn't rein in the various republics. And after its August 1998 stock market and economic crash, Russia was effectively bankrupt.

But a year later, Vladimir Putin led Russia to a recovery. Lucky for him, his appointment coincided with increases in world oil prices. These higher prices led Russian oil companies to increase production, and Russia became the world's largest producer of oil and natural gas.

Russia quickly paid off its debt and with its natural gas exports, it found itself with an important strategic weapon. Today, the Germans are dependant on Russia for 43 percent of their gas imports. If the Russians cut off that flow, there is no ready substitute. No wonder European leaders are unwilling to challenge Russia -- they can't afford to.

Russia's hostility has other roots, too. Their efforts to encourage South Ossetia and Abkhazia to secede from Georgia was a way of punishing Georgia for seeking NATO membership. The Russians were also angry because Georgia allowed Western companies to build pipelines connecting producers in central Asia with consumers in Europe. This undercuts Russia's monopoly and its ability to buy gas cheaply in central Asia and sell it at high prices in Europe.

Russia doesn't seem to care if the rest of world treats it as a bully. Now that its economy has recovered and it has powerful oil and gas weapons to use against those who oppose it, Russia knows that it has a strong hand -- and now it knows we know.

Cold War 2.0!!! Yippeeee!!! Now instead of one superpower aggressively furthering its agenda and opening up nations to democracy and wealth as a result, we'll have two superpowers again, with the other enslaving its population and those they occupy and exercising state control as a consequence of furthering its agenda!! Finally we'll have balance again!

A young angry white or brown male with low IQ who let's alex jones do their thinking. The loonies that are always going around copying and pasting canards that were put together by others, as legitimate "questions" about 9/11. Generally insecure, low self-esteems and believe they have inside information that others are simply incapable of seeing, but themselves.

    Gtech is a patriotic man.
But often times he does not see the thruth and does not even want to know it. He is a good man, but not 100% ready to handle the absolute truth (like so many on DP, US, middle east etc.).
It is part of the American culture, better tell a nice lie than a truth that would hurt the feelings of others.
In order to have a real progress, you have to know and accept the Truth as it is. And be strong enough to handle it no matter if good or bad for you.

ST12 is angry about the media coverage of the georgia/Russian conflict. Georgia invaded South Ossetia and here is what they did:
    http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2008/08/11/2331118.htm
That is why Russia started bombing. Yet, in much of the western media, they seem to portray Georgia as being a poor victim of Russian aggression.

Georgia is an ally, but I disapprove of what they did. Even the candidates are ignoring it, and making Russia out to be the villain. Gtech, read this and I'm interested in what you think about it:
    http://www.themoscowtimes.com/article/1020/42/369804.htm

Actually, Gtech is extremely honest and patriotic as well.

Just based on your posts here on the Russia Georgia issues it is clear you are objective and honest to a fault.

It is a fact the Americans believed Iraq had something to do with 9/11, but in fact it had nothing to do with it.
Lies were fabricated so as to get the support of the American public. Gtech was one of them he fell to believe in those lies. I did not.

I was all along against this criminal war on Iraq and was right all along. Gtech and many others on DP were for it and were wrong about it and many still support it to this day.

If Gtech like many others was not lied to there would be no war on Iraq and America would be 1.6 trillon richer (the Iraqi war costs about $600 bln, but if the money was used here in US it could have made over the years 1.6 trillion $.)

This war on Iraq is a really, really big disaster for America, Iraq and the world.

The TRUTH was not told and is not being told to the Americans on major internatial issues and that costs a lot!

I think Georgia is getting somewhat of a pass. I think Russia may have provoked the Georgian President to the point of him having a nervous breakdown. The invasion was stupid and he seems to say something really stupid publicly about once an hour.

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080814/ap_on_re_eu/georgia_impassioned_president

He really doesn't seem qualified to run a state, especially in a delicate region of the world. The Russians have probably had this response planned for months, it was just a matter of Saakashvili taking the bait, and he did, which makes him an idiot. And if he thought we'd come and help to directly fight a war with Russia, he's more than an idiot, he's insane. No one would win a US/Russia war.

I don't know how that would happen. He is surounded all the time with his own staff.

He is mentally sick person. A normal person wouldn't order the execution of anarmed men, women, and children which he claims to be his own citizens.
(He's claiming the region, and those people were living on that land for centuries.)
He/Saakashvili is a lawyer, he should know better than that.

I think every country puts it's own 'spin' on news, I think that's only natural, and national news channels tend to concentrate on stories that involve their citizens and their interests . However when I'm in the USA I sometimes DO feel a bit cut-off from the rest of the world. World headlines tend to be glossed over in favour of detailed coverage of a car chase in Arkansas and the overall feeling is that you're in a giant hotel and all you can watch is the hotel's information channel.
