Is there a penalty if the website has few pages?

Do search engines penalize you if your website has very few pages?

For example, websites with less than 10 pages of content?

No there is no penalty. But if there is another site with equal content to yours (whatever that may be) and it has 20 pages, chances are it will have a higher SERP.

It's based on the quality of the content; not the quantity. ;)

Just make sure to add more quality pages over time, maybe 1 a week, bear in mind that all sites usually start out small and google understands this i think.

No there is no penatly for a website which has less than 10 pages, i am not sure where you would come up with this idea from however its totally false.

As Ssandecki says it is based on quality not quantity however i would add the rate at which new content is added either quality or quantity does effect SEO too.

The amount of content doesn't matter in individual keywords. However, if you want to rank for a lot of keywords in your niche then you want more content. With a lot of links to it of course.

I typically make rather small websites, near 15 pages, and then work on search engine optimization for them. I can tell you from experience that the quantity is far less important than quality.

Hmmmm, I'm not sure if I'd say more web pages is "better", you'd have a "better" chance ranking for different long tail keywords and phrases. However, a site with 25 pages can out rank a site with 25,000 pages. So, my opinion is it's the quality of the web pages rather than the quantity. :)

i have not heard that there is any penalty for less pages in the site.

And always quality matters then quantity. So concentrate on Quality. But remember one thing your site should serve A to Z information of your products or services that you are offering.

    Hi ..
I am very Sure that Number of pages is not an issue in getting Penalty. Some times you get Penalty even if your website has number of pages .
All what matters is content on the pages of your website.

    Regards

Don't worry, there is no penalization having small no. of pages in your websites. For ex. Flash websites have just one page where all things works.
