Buyer Beware: Name.com

Yesterday August 12 I had a LLLL.net in my shopping cart at name.com. My credit card did not go through for some reason so the domain stayed in my cart. Today I check out whoIs info on the LLLL.net domain and what a coincidence! On August 12 someone else registered it and now it is parked. On top of that out of the many registrars available this domain was registered at no other than Name LLC...

The WhoIs info is private and reads this:

    Expiration Date: 2009-08-12 13:27:20
    Creation Date: 2008-08-12 13:27:20

    Name Servers:
    NS1.NAME.COM
    NS2.NAME.COM
    NS3.NAME.COM
    NS4.NAME.COM

Not to long ago, I recommended Name.com to GoDaddy. I completely take back my recommendation. In fact, Godaddy is 100x better and this is coming from the owner of fuckgodaddy.me....

    ^LOLLLLL thats funny

    But anyway I'm with name.com
They do a discount for the first year ($5.99), and the renewal rate is cheaper than most...at $7.99 per year after.
    And that's without coupons.

Also they got friendly support, and when I locked myself out my account it costs $20 to get back in...they gave it to me for free :D

Don't take it so hard. We need meticulous members here to check on things and find out what others have missed.
This one just happened to be you slipping on a banana peel. Welcome to DP!

Don't worry about it. Rookie mistake. John McCain crashed 4 jets and now he's running for President. :)

Even though I have heard and read that issues like those occur more often at GoDaddy, in fact there are serveral of those cases posted in this forum.

from a developers point of view, the shopping cart of name.com contains errors, i assume they are using sessions/cookies and when you put items in your cart, when you try to checkout when you're not logged in, all the items are cleared, i also noticed that when you take too long choosing domains, the item(s) in your cart somehow gets deleted

Yes, but slipping on a banana peel at my age can be dangerous. :(
My only excuse is being so accustomed to answering customer tickets that I never thought about it.
My kids are right, I'm getting 'oldtimers' disease.

It's been a few years since I checked but doesn't godaddy still have the largest number of domains registered by quite a bit?

Unfortunately this sort of thing can practically happen with any registrar. Go
Daddy, eNom, Moniker, Network Solutions, it doesn't matter who.

It's probably coincidence, and an unfortunate one at that.

I have experienced the same issue with GoDaddy.com. I both posted on his blog and emailed him directly, he told me that the available names are not registered or sold to others. I have experienced this several times, returning a couple of hours later to find the domain name(s) were registered by the registrar or other company. If it was available there was no demand for it, but mysteriously it is registered now. See my post here: http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=908715
