Received Stolen Funds :: What should I do?

    I'll explain the story,

A guy had originally offered to buy some article writing services,

He claimed he only had Liberty Reserve and I told him I only accepted MoneyBookers. I suggested he register an account at MoneyBookers and upload funds via his Credit Card.

He surprisingly agreed and did it rather quickly, then upon payment he claimed he "forgot his birth date" and couldn't send the money.

From this point, he signed off for 2 hours and once he came back on - he agreed to send the money now.

He sent the money from a very obscure e-mail address, something along the lines of - which leads me to believe that he registered a random account and added a stolen credit card ( if possible? ) and sent me the money through that.

If this is the case, what are my options?

If you are sure what you suspect might be true, report this issue to Moneybooker.

Had it been PayPal I would consider the money refund, before they hold the funds for investigation

I am relatively positive this is the case, after I confronted him about the possibility of paying me with a stolen credit card, he immediately stopped contact with me.

I am just not familiar with MoneyBooker's policies, their FAQ doesn't really touch upon the subject of fraud payments and such, although they do have a contact form to report conflicts with transactions and such. According to Google, MoneyBookers is notorious for mediocre customer support so it's safe to assume that won't help much

My only concern for the time being is if the money can be pulled out of the account. Similar to PayPal, if you send funds via a credit card, and the transaction is reversed from the credit card company directly - the funds are pulled straight out of whatever account it's in, but I am not sure if this is the same case with MoneyBookers

    Refund the money to who?

The buyer registered a new account, probably under a fake or stolen identity and added a stolen credit card. The only option for a refund I have without knowing who the card belongs to is sending the money back to the MoneyBookers account from which the buyer sent it, at this time it may be the best idea for me to avoid trouble

Either way, maybe I shouldn't jump to conclusions - It's only been 24 hours or so, I'll see what happens

You don't have to worry who is the real holder of that stolen credit card. Because once you make the refund Moneybooker will revert the transaction and credit all the money back to credit card holder :)

Offering refunds as soon as possible is good idea, because when this unauthorized transaction will come in CC holder's knowledge he will probably file a chargeback against Moneybooker, so either way you will loose this money...

i think you need to email moneybookers rather then wasting time here... because on moneybookers, a buyer can file a chargeback if there credit card was stolen.... and then you will have to pay the chargeback fees.... so contant moneybookers as soon as possible and ask them to take the money out of your account and send it back to the card company as soon as possible before the real owner file a chargeback.... just know that even moneybookers allow chargeback in case of stolen credit card... so beware of scammers...

seems very dodgy. i would do what jackass2007 said and next time if you feel there's something fishy, don't go ahead with the deal.

Did you already deliver stuff? If not, then refund. Otherwise I would just wait what happens. The worst what can happen is it will be taken back from your account, but that´s it

Well, I suggest to refund the money, if it's stolen, then that's not your business. Btw once I saw a forum (I don't remember the url, it was hosted on brazil) and there ppl traded identities of other ones!

I think its not a stolen CC
    its his CC
Maybe this is what he planning to do
register new moneybooker acc and pay you via the CC
after he get the product from you
he will contact the CC issuer and tell them to hold the payment which he make to you by claiming that this is unauthorized payment

Hi guys, I got news

I contacted Moneybookers and they kindly explained that Moneybookers is hard currency and there is nothing that can be done to reverse the payment from my account.

    Good for you

That's probably the biggest advantage Moneybooker has over PayPal ;)

If a chargeback is filled with the CC-issuer and it can be proven that the CC was used unauthorized MB will definitely have to pay back.

What they possibly meant is that people can´t fill a "dispute" (unlike PP) with MB directly, but of course people can do with their CC-issuer

I brought this up as well with Moneybookers, they told me that Moneybookers absorbs the fees and the only way I can ever lose my money, is if im detected of fraudulent activities. otherwise the money I am sent, stays.

I read their ToS and it said this

Correct, and if a stolen CC was used I guess they will definitely count it as "fraudulent" activity (I thought this was what you thought could be happen)

    dont think so
a friend of mine received payment from stolen resources and his account went into investigation as well, even the payments he made with that balance onward were reversed

may be they have changed TOS
