What has Google become?

Google has become something else than a search engine. It does not show results correctly, it spiders better politicaly based sites like CNN, it doesn't matter how many pages do you have on your site anymore, so what do you think what is the next generation web search engine?

The reason why CNN gets such good rankings/spider indexed is because so many sites link to their articles. This has increased the site rankings over years now. CNN also has a PR9 so Google really trust CNN as a website.

Considering the power Google has, it could be really bad. I'm always a little surprised when I see negative sentiments towards the company. If cool heads weren't in high management, any number of aggressive strategies rolled out by Google could pretty much make the internet suck for everyone, or at least significantly worse.

Google is the Brad Pitt of the internet world, everyone want's to be him but it takes to much effort and money to, and you have to adopt many other sites/foreign babies.

We will see what they become in the coming years.

    you guys are so right

they decide they will only index part of your site because they want to and they sandbox some because they want to and they might decide to penalize your site through no fault of your own and leave it penalized for a long time...

they sell parking ads but tell us we would get banned for one page mfa sites

they sell links on the top page of search and make them look just like the organic search, but they penalize or ban us if we buy or sell links

they manually tweak their search results to make up for problems in their algorithm, but that is basically helping those that have the right connections or way of being heard

    etc etc

it is a big mess right now and it will only get worse I am afraid

This scenario means we have to make our site as authoritative as we could. Google will never stop to make it's algorithm as perfect as possible to get rid of those who are jumping beyond.

It does not show results correctly? I think Google still gives the best results. Sure they stumble a couple of times but Google is still pretty good at what they do.

To be honest, I don't like a lot about Google.

But it doesn't matter a shitworth what I think, or anyone else thinks.

As long as it dominates every aspect of the Internet, the only option we have is to deal with it.

The problem anyone has trying to depose Google is the same problem as anyone trying to depose Ebay, the average joe (my girlfriend, my non-techie buddy, my sister etc) doesn't know, or need, anything else.

The mountain to climb to get these users to switch to something else is massive, and quite possibly, impossible.

I look at these people using the net, or talking about the net, and things like extra functionality, better design, easier navigation etc don't come into it, they just know Google gives them an answer, they know ebay will sell their item, they don't care, or have any need to think about, any other choices.

I'm sure there will be no other major player in the search field for at least 10 years, Google is embeded in the average net users subconscious, and that is something no amount of money spent by the other search engines can change.
