Please review my new poker site +rep given

Please take a few moments and take a look at my new poker website:

You will notice that I have not yet finished the tips/lessons section as I am waiting for the rest of the unique lessons to be written. Also, I do not have a link for Poker Stars in the left column. I am currently waiting for confirmation into their affiliate program. I know this is a niche that a lot of people like to stay away from, but I love poker and this is not the typical poker site with a barrage of affiliate links. It's going to be full of unique content and I have high hopes for it.

Please let me know if there's anything I can do to make this a better site.

Color in your top banner (b&w bleh)

POKER YAK! headline should be in a cooler font, or incorporated into your new colored banner

Do you have an interesting tag line to add?

Need to fix headlines that are cut off on top by ads

Your longer articles (Lesson 1 and Take Advantage of a Bad Poker Player, for example) need some formatting, such as bold subheads, maybe bullets, etc. Kinda of hard/boring to read long sections of unformatted text.

 

I agree with what the above user has mentioned.

The header is black and white, and some color in it would deffiniately be great! (I could design one for cheap if wanted)

The page (for me anyways) is not centered. I do not know if that was intended to be that way, though I think it would look a lot nicer if it was centered correctly. I am viewing the page in FF3, and on Windows Vista. (Just incase that was not intended to be there).

You have a fairly clean layout. I think it could use a little bit more color in it, and if you added a colored banner I think it would make a whole lot of difference.

Other than that it isn't too bad. I would also take into consideration of what the above user mentioned.

yeah all of the above, but another thing is isnt there a theme you can use that utilize the whole screen? it seems a bit waste to have 30% of the screen doing nothing while it could be used for generating income.

also gambling or casino related site is against google TOS, take them off before google ban you

 

Fix your template. Everything is shifted to the side leaving a big white space

 

i would fix the font on your banner, i kind of dig the b/w but maybe you could throw a little red on some dice or maybe a couple of cards to go for that vintage effect. i would style your site to be more of a Vegas theme, and it would be cool to see some video tutorials as well. Good Luck!

Are you viewing my site using Firefox with Adspy enabled? It does that on mine too, but as soon as you disable adspy, the ads are back to normal.

I appreciate the other comments, especially about the first lesson. I will go over it and make some revisions.

After looking at the header for a few minutes, I do agree that it could use some colour. I think I will start a contest to edit the header. I'll send you a pm with the link.

I also looked at the centering, and (to me) it looks like it could be a little off center, but I could hardly tell in FF3 and Windows Vista. I will, however, add it to my list of things to fix.

You are absolutely correct. This is the first thing I will change to avoid a ban. I will have to look into whether or not Bidvertiser accepts poker sites.

Hi Kevin,

As soon as I saw the banner of ads at the top I wanted to leave.

A few small things, the bue links look out of place and there should be space between lessons/tip for easy readibility.

Yeah, the blue links to look very out of place the more that I look at it.

I have decided to strip the site clean and start fresh. I have a new header that a fellow DPer created for me and I will be going with a full screen design. Once I get the index done I'll post it here for more constructive criticism!

Are you getting any decent search rankings?

I've never had much luck with poker affiliates especially after they banned online poker in the USA.

I've never used bidvertiser but that red background doesn't match anything and makes it look like a Google ad which nobody usually wants to click. I see you are already using white as a link color so it's going to be tough. I try to make my links blue since it's the universal link color. Gets a better ctr usually also.

The site is all about affiliate links, you need to get those poker tips going.

I like to write and know lots of stuff about poker especially texas holdem. I'm a mean tournament player.

I used to have a poker site that gave free advertisement to all the charitable games and offered enhanced ads that gave lots more game info etc.

Then the state changed it's advertising laws and I had to post their (all games) license #'s even on the free ads.

That became far too time consuming which made for the demise of my site.

I really like the simplicity of the site but the first thing that confused me, even though I knew what it was telling me, was the big black sidebar on the right. It is extremely eye popping, with just few links on it.

If you want to keep it, you could lower it opacity to its half, because if you use another color for it, it would just look ugly or it would just still be so "eye-popping".

Great looking header and love it because the info is really easy to find, but I will say this again, the left sidebar is annoying, maybe it is also because it takes up way too much space. I believe it is like 20-30% of the screen.

 

I agree with Nsane. That black sidebar with no working informational links screams affiliate site.

If you want people to sign up to those affiliate poker sites you will at least have to give each site a personal review.

 

Why aren't the backgrounds of the titles learn, play and dominate the same? If they are not clickable, they'd better be on the same background.
"About Us" page is leading to a parked domain.

 

I'm going to play around with the colour on the ads...it doesn't look right. You're right about the blue links too, typically they do get better ctr.

If you could write we 500 word articles for each of the tips/lessons I need, then you're hired. I'll send you more details.
