It’s available, works and easy to get, I wanted to get into linux but it is a pain in the ass to set up and Macs are expensive.

I figure if something runs and it working fine use and run it.

Because it's what people are used to.
It's what people grew up using.
It's what comes with most computers.
It's what most business', schools, etc use (so it's a skill people must need to know).

Honestly, there are better OS' out there, and for cheaper (some even free). People just don't know or don't care about it.

It's user friendly, compatible with most of the Hardware and and most of the applications are developed for Windows.

I am an IT and it's really hard for me to use Linux for daily tasks - watching Movies, installing software etc...what about the normal user.

    For me it's because:

    1. User friendly interface.
    2. Many of the software is built for Windows platform compare to other platform.
    3. Games. Windows is still the best OS for gaming.

Hehe, when I first read the heading I could have sworn it said why is Windows the most unstable OS. I was getting ready to start throwing out data and statistics regarding the stability of other OSs in comparison and just go off on you for hating on Microsoft.

Then I read it more carefully and the answer to your question is that Microsoft has spent millions of dollars on Human Factors Engineering, which is a nit of psychology that tries to figure out how to most effectively interact with a machine. I don't think anyone has gone through as much effort to develop this as Microsoft. Apple is close with some of their usability, but it still feels foreign to a regular PC user.
