    You need to know for your keyword:
    1) The number of searches
    2) The number of results

    Simply KEI is the number of searches squared, multiplied by 1000, divided by the number of results.

    the more popular the keywords are, and the less competition they have, which means they have a better chance of getting to the top.

    According to Sumantra Roy,a respected Search Engine Positioning specialist, KEI is a measure of how effective a keyword is for your web site.

    Formula: KEI = (P^2/C)

    P = popularity / traffic searches
    ^ = squared
    / = divided
    C = competition

    Keyword Effectiveness Index - The KEI compares the Count result (number of times a keyword has appeared in our data) with the number of competing web pages to pinpoint exactly which keywords are most effective for your campaign.

    The results of KEI is used to find the effectiveness of every keywords to target. If you get >1 KEI it means the keywords is good too target while if it's <1 it means the keywords is useless to target.

    Agreed!!
    But if KEI is <1 then it means that keyword has more competitions. So, it would be good if it has more search volume.:)

    You can interpret the figure KEI as the number of clicks you get daily on that keyword given the search popularity (p) and competition (c) on that keyword.

    So a KEI < 1 is of little use unless you target on several of such niche keywords (1 to 3 per page) at a time so that you get a reasonable traffic on your overall website.

    That is what "The Long Tail" is about.

    Cheers,

    Bill
