Well.. There are many automatic sitemap creator scripts. Just install them in a directory on your site and keep updating your Sitemap every day!
It really depends on your site too. If you have a small static website, then there is no need to update the sitemap. however last mod date would be good to update. But if you have a large or even small site but getting some new inputs every day or hour etc, then you need to update the sitemap depending on your site growth. Best Regards Ali
Submit the updated sitemap to google whenever you change the contents in your site. Google will never penalize your site for submitting one.
You will not get penalizations for submiting sitemap often! It helps google to index the net! However check the dates when google crawls your site. My site is visited by google spiders every 15 days. There's no reason why i should send a new sitemap more often than that.
Why would you update a sitemap when changing content in your site? Please explain this to me. I thought it will only need to be updated if you change or add new directories/files in your domain path. If you change content this does not affect your URL path or structure. Am I wrong?
You should update your sitemap whenever you change something or add new content. When you submit a new sitemap, google compares it with the old one to see what's changed what's new. I suggest everyone to read googles instruction about sitemaps. There is written clearly everything. Google won't penalize you if you submit a sitemap often. The technique of changing the "lastmod" date in your sitemap links to theactual date is practically useless according to google's documentation. Googlebot checks you pages lastmod date when it crawls them. So better to make a script witch updates the file's dates on your server automatically. Cheers
Thanks Swingerman that was really helpful. So now I understand it is the sitemap.xml mod date which is looked at, so if the mod date is not new or still the same then Googlebot will not recrawl. In a sense, a properly updated sitemap.xml can save you a lot of bandwidth.
Depends on how often you add or change things on your website. I usually re-submit my sitemap every week.
Thank you for clear my concerning. This is Official Google Webmaster Center Blog page which describes about sitemap faq. http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2008/01/sitemaps-faqs.html Cheers
