Google July 2008 PR Update - Does a PR drop effect rankings?

Discussion in 'Google' started by pieman_fellis, Aug 4, 2008.

I upgraded my website the day before the update, PR has dropped, it now ranks worse, is this a coincidence or was it a bad time to update my site?

    Thanks all!

Updating your site has nothing to do with the PR drop. Anytime you change the on-page content, you can affect your rankings. Google also tweaks its algorithm constantly, so it could have nothing to do with the updating of your site.

So even if I had not updated my site my PR would have dropped?

    Does PR also effect rankings?

Do you think my rankings change could be due to site update?

    Thanks!

As mjewel said anytime you change your on-site content your search engine rankings may go up or down. PR can affect ranking, but thats not to say that just becuase your page has a high PR it will rank better than pages with a lower PR. It depends on a number of different variables.

Its a good idea to keep a spreadsheet listing your search engine rankings for your main keywords or phrases so you can monitor them as and when you make changes to see if it has a positive or negative effect.

I noticed I lost quite a few back links in the update, perhaps this is the reason, if not it must be the new version of the site?

Do you think the rankings could come back over the next week or have I lost them for good?

Would be putting the old version of the site back be a bad idea at this time?

    Thanks!

To boost your website PR you need to gain high quality backlinks and to boost your website keywords in SE you need to optimize your site well. PR has nothing to do with your website design. Benefit of high PR is that the website gets crawled frequently by the bots.

    MarkwebUK...

So high PR with a optimised site = good ranking. Are you saying that link text is not that important?

If during the upgrade, there was some down time then it is possible to lose ranking in search engines, but I think drop in PR has nothing to do with it.

Work on your backlinks with sites with high PR's... post articles in article directories, forums, etc...

The down time wouldn't effect your PR

Yes, PR do effect you ranking as far as serp is concerned . But unique and more accurate content can still give you good position in serps .. So don't get worried about goodle PR , but just concentrate on your blog content & you will be fine .
