Yahoo was always about "media"searching. For example, if I wanted to find something about an actress or singer I would use Yahoo. For homeworks I would use Altavista.

My first search engine was lycos , after that infoseek.com came and at last altavista was the revolution :)
Then one they one of my friends told me that there was a new player that had a good database of russian sites it was google.

Probably yahoo and alta vista. But don't think either had as much of the market as google. I remember being impressed with AltaVista back in the pre-google era.

I used Webcrawler in the early days of the web, but Altavista and Yahoo right before Google.

Lol, wasn't till you mentioned it, that I remembered it (vaguely). after looking a the archives them memories came back, especially the "Search before you surf" slogan..
Seems they are still around, but now search the search engines.

I also remember when Compuserve finally gave in and opened up to the rest of the internet.. but I can't remember what I used to search them. I am sure it will come to me..

    Cheers
    James

MSN was never anything. Always playing catch-up but never had any real traction since the beginning.

Before Google, Altavista was the go-to search engine. Yahoo was huge as a directory but their search engine was never that great.

I would use Altavista ... It had the capability to becdoem teh next google but it missed. Bablefish translation was also with them and if I am not mistaken they had an iumage search as well which was excellent.

Lots of people I know used to use Yahoo before Google. Before Yahoo, Altavista seemed to be the popular one. I read that in 1996, Altavista provided search results for Yahoo.
