Why don't search engines, release search statistics?

Why doesn't Google, Yahoo, MSN...tell the public exactly how many times people are searching for certain keywords each month? Why the guessing game?

All I see are some top ten lists for certain keywords....I'm talking about numbers like how many people searched for "pink fuzzy bunny slippers" in March. That kind of data.

    Hey,

That's cool, but what do they "results" number represent? Are those suppose to be monthly searches for each keyword? Those numbers seem high!

I have this tool installed on my site that checks Overture results for 18 different countries, it also allows bulk checks.

    http://www.quickwhois.co.uk/overture.php

Overture results are not 100% accurate though.

    Nice find, thanx. :)

EDIT: That tool is really slow for me, I am still waiting for the results to show up.

No. that clearly says "results" means this term is found in this number of pages.

    Hey Jim,

I don't think so...that's what I thought at first...but if you compare the results numbers with the actual results, they are a lot different, so it can't be that.
