well not really but short url are easier to remember by viewers than the long one, to get more advantage on search engine use your major keywords on your subpages and folders of your website because url is the first thing that crawls by robots.

better to use keyword in url which you are going to target for that particular page. and use maximum 2-3 keyword phase. that will look professional and simple.

I think it is good for your customer to remember it easily. So, you may be able to give it mouth to mouth marketing. This is the sole reason of it.

The first thing I see in short url is easy to remember and not sure if it has an effect to your ranking.

Agree with you. I have also used my keywords in URL for that particular page.

http://www.cybernetvision.com/search-engine-optimization/ you can find it. Yeah as i have started SEO for my dream site recently so you will not found PR or back links for this particular page and also wont find ranking. But it will help me to get SERP and traffic. From your URL visitor will come to know where they will be reach.

A short URL is effectively a redirect via another domain , some of that credit may go to the other domain , also if you have cpanel , you can create your own short URLs , such as http://mydomain.com/1/ never trust someone else's domain too much because they are not yours, and an advert can be placed there, the host site can be down , or whatever, at a future time.

    No effects at all.

Example: www.short.com VS www.shorturl.com has NO effect at all. The only effect will be if you are targeting the keyword (in this case short) then the first will be better to use since its targeted.

The rule of thumb is to keep the domain URL less then 25 characters. Other than that, no effect.

Are you talking about re-directs like http://tinyurl.pl/tx4 or just short URLs ? If you mean just short URLs ignore my comment.

Yes it does to certain extent but it would be better if the url is made up of important keywords.
