Would Google penalize me for this?

I have heard about link farming and linking my own domains in the same class C ip address range, but I am not sure if this fall under link farming or whatever that violates Google's TOS. So I'd be glad, if some one could explain it in detail.

I run a web design and web hosting site, and I have designed and developed several websites for my clients. All those sites I have designed are hosted on my server, i.e they share the same IP address.

In all those sites I designed, I have placed a site-wide footer link saying something like "Site designed by my webdesign company" and linking it to my main website which is on the same server.
So the problem now is, for the past few days I have been thinking whether google would penalize any of the sites or my main website.

How many sites are we talking here ? I wouldn't worry too much about getting penalized but don't expect a lot of impact on the SERP's from these links. Google will discount such links.

Is your backlinks only from such sites ?
Why can't you build backlinks from other methods too ?

they way you are doing the linking, it will be considered as networked sites but no as link farm. you will not get penalized for it but after few links, you will not be getting much benefit out of this either

Interconnected website should not have the same IP address. Google knows they are a network and they don't like them so much.

I doubt very much that you would get penalised for it, hundreds if not thousands of web design companys already do this. If the sites are all on the same server and IP address then the links will probably be devalued though.

Don't worry about it. But since you have the opportunity to add links to your client's page, make sure that you develop a deep linking strategy. Don't point all of the links to your main site: Yourmainsite.com add some deep links as well. Example: yoursite.com/design etc......

That is a great SEO strategy used by most SEO companies. You need to also add blog comment backlinks from a variety of blogs. You should also do this with forums. Try to find at least 20 forums that allow backlinks and make about 100 post on each one.

    I;m 100% agree wid Sultanofseo..

I wouldn't be concerned too much about getting penalized but don't guess a lot of impact on the SERP's from these links.

In most of the cases you don't get plenty for this , but the link from the same class c IP do not give your PR Credits .. Google do not consider weigth of link from same class C IP , hope it will help !

I do this and many web companies do, I do not think it will hurt you but the benefit I do not see as alot. A competitor has done this on 100+ sites some on same IP some on different IP - there PR is 5. But a new competitor has 10 sites doing same thing and maybe and a few more blog posts and forum posts and they have PR of 5 also. I have a PR of 4 and have been at it for 3 months building links so I think PR 5 is not far off, with more forum posts, blog posts and new content in the site. I think the key is not to rely on this solely, get links in other places also but linking to your site from the sites you build should not be an issue, also remember a link in the bottom of the sites you build is great advertising. Will you get more referral business from people seeing that you built a site and then contacting you for work than you will from the search engines for your design site it is possible also.
