From my point of view high PR domains are worthless because they tend to lose that pagerank shortly after Google find them expired. I lost time and money doing this a while back.
Depends how expensive they are and how long they've been expired for? All in all, 301 redirecting PR domains to another works well as long as you do it in time and pay a good price!
