In my forum (link in my sig) I put them in the index page directly above all other forums, with 1 link unit and 1 text ad unit. I also have them in other places, like after the first post in each topic.

I would suggest you try out with leaderboards placed in between your forum main sections and see how it goes

I would be carefull with using AdSense in forums. Forums are visited by a more or less closed usergroup and theres a good chance, some users might click just to do you a favour and raise a clickfraud alert by doing so. The other problem with forums and AdSense is, that you'll have to do some heavy moderation to make sure, you don't get threads/posts, that violate the TOS.

I try and run experiments with mine. On my most visited pages I change my adsense location and color untill I find one that works the best. I've only had my site for about 3 weeks and it's the first one I've ever made so I'm new to most everyhthing. But what I found so far is that if you have them at the top of your page in a horizontal leaderboard that blends with your site it works the best.

For your forums, I think a ad unit below the main menu will look good. Also, add a link unit after the first post like DP.
