    You should write a good quality stuff and automatically ur backlinks will increase !! and ur page rank will increase !! If you will try to increase of PR, it wont help to get u more traffic ! Jst write original-good stuff !!

    I always thought paid links can be discounted, but not get you banned or penalized.

    The way it's been told, it's like something that in the past might have got you banned or penalized, now it won't any longer. It might be the case that they just lifted penalties from websites who fixed their issues and now are abiding by their terms, hmm ...

    I think google took these drastic measure due to the fact that webmasters have been manipulating directories for quick PR gain. Well, it gets harder and harder with google.
