Not literally. But I mean they are dominating the net right now.

I'll help get you guys starting by listing a few things they have already done. They have a lot more though.

They are the biggest search engine. They are the biggest online advertising company. Only search engine to have a satellite. They are also coming out with a new phone soon.

How long do you think this dominance will continue for?

I think throughout history empires were built and eventually crumbled. Absolutely nothing lasts forever. The same holds true for the almighty Google...

Look many years how popular other search engines were? Google will be the same... eventually it will rot and another, (or high tech thing) will come about and rule :p

They will be dominant in their niche which is search and online advertising and that's about all. They have to constantly watch out for challenges from Microsoft and also disruptive technologies from new start ups.

They will be dominant for the next few years, but for Internet, anything can change. They do not have absolute advantage over a stable product as Microsoft has with the desktop OS. What they have depends a lot on technology which changes at light speed.

Their definitely making enough money to be able to try out new avenues and not be too concerned whether the project is successful and worth more time and investment or to completely drop the idea.

Well, I used to use Google years ago before most people even heard about it. I liked it because of its speed. Thats why Google has become so popular. In this microwave popcorn society we demant instant gratification. Google is a fad and will not rule the world, although they seem to be ruling the online world they are still only a peice of the pie.

Absolutely, I remembered the times when Netscape ruled supreme, who would have thought that IE destroyed it in the end. Infoseek and Altavista used to rule too, before Google made them irrelevant, this happened in the course of less than a decade. Internet times are much shorter than normal brick and mortar, I won't be surprise if 5 years down the road, some new start ups are the dominant company in the Internet search segment....

Whoa, I used to search a lot using Altavista and excite (not to mention the age of angelfire and geocities blah blah blah)

Google will eventually fall, but not yet it seems. Maybe users will chop my head for this, but so many people here inserting their "niche(trash)" sites it really disrupts the results page of real content and "rewrites/bought articles" content. We'll see how they handle it.

Now, I wonder who's going to be the next successor.

I think they will dominate the seqarch inductry because they have gone so advanced in this field that it is almost impossoble for a new entrant to disown them
