Which e-commerce software to use?

    Hi everyone

I'm setting up an online shop and wondered if anyone could advise as to the best software to use? I don't mind paying if you think it's worth it - I'm currently leaning towards getting cs-cart (www.cs-cart.com) which is about $265. I know other options such as os-commerce and Zen Cart are free but they don't look as good to me.

I'm an experienced web designer so my knowledge of HTML, CSS etc is sound. The visual layout is important for me - as is the ability to customise it.

Any advice would be much appreciated

    Thanks for your time

    Adam

Some of my customers are using cs-cart and i really think this shopping cart is to expensive and really not good and totally not SE friendly. Os commerce is a good shopping cart and it is free, there are great ways to make it look so proffesional, script is also very flexible.

    Tell you wat
    oscommerce is the best
but you have to do some extra programming if you want extra features
which u can always get help
but if you want a high end system which is powered by asp.net
you can go for asp.net storefront

Thanks for the advice guys, much appreciated. It would need to be PHP/MySQL as that's my programming environment of choice. I've had a few people suggest os-commerce so it looks like I might end up giving that a whirl.

    Keep the advice coming...

Actinic is a fantastic e-commerce platform, which I use on a couple of sites and have gained fantastic results from the softwares SEO-friendliness. (And a lot more hard work building links!)

oscommerce hasn't had a major update in years.... (or has it? I haven't played with it for a long time.)

I would no longer recommend it. Magento however looks like a viable option.

I just changed one of my eBooks sites www.ebookwebsales.co.uk to Cube Cart3, it cost $105 if you want to remove the copyright if not then it’s free. I mainly changed so I could have the Seo friendly URLs. (A Free add-on) the templates are very basic and not really very nice to look at. The script works great as a download store.

    Thanks Brian

oscommerce, cube cart, open cart - all are best

Shopping cart should be selected based on your products.

If you are looking very large shop then go for oscommerce.
If you need a simple shopping cart then go for cube cart or open cart.

    Regards

Open Cart has a nice simple layout, but there's no mouseovers on the menu items which is a bit poor. Anyone customised Open Cart before? If so, is it easy? (or should I say, easier to customise than oscommerce?)

Thanks for the advice guys. I've just stumbled across the WordPress e-commerce package and it looks pretty neat - does anyone have any experience or opinions of it?
