    Hello,

I am wondering how to bring more members and sign ups to my membership website. I am thinking about using direct email marketing, but i am not sure that the idea is good. Any suggestions ?

Well, in general you should offer extremely excellent content at quick speeds and valuable quality. Once that is accomplished and you receive a steady stream of users, then you may proceed to limiting the content in some fashion OR begin to optimize your service or product but allow for your users to recognize that it is only available in such a way upon premium access. Email marketing is a great way to reach out to your visitors, but I believe that it doesn't work well with any type of market target. So, with more insight on what your service/product is, I can directly find a suitable approach for you.

It works wonder IF your subscribers opted-in on your site (and your site only!). If you buy a list from some shady guy selling a million emails for $30, I can guarantee you won't get any conversions because a) they're like being blasted with spam and thus your email would be lost in the load of crap and b) they're probably not interested in what you're selling as their emails would have came from a completely unrelated website.

I think he meant that you should set up an affiliate program for your membership site, so that members can refer their friends and they get a cut of the sign-up fee.

It boggles my mind to actually read such a question. Do you honestly want to tell me, that you were able to setup a website, without ever hearing everyone complaining, how much they hate spam?! Here is your answer: No, spamming is NOT a good idea. Your target audience is completely untarget, emaing that you see a return rate of much less then 1%. In order to become lucrative, you have to pester so many people, that you are likely to end up with one or more of the following:
    • A bad reputation
    • dropped out of Google's index
    • criminal charges

Looks like you have no idea what email marketing is then blackonyx. It isn't just spam - it's a very successful method that aims to capture the visitor's email address on their visit to the website in order to get them coming back to the site and/or buy related products that they would be interested in. It's far from spam, particularly when they agreed to receive emails from the site owner (and likely would have had to go through a double-opt in process).

Yeah, most of email marketing is done through opt-in (sometimes double opt-in) and is the type of marketing people want. They sign up on your list by themselves because you make them an offer they can't resist (free report, free course etc).

Then you start giving them more free stuff and good tips which in return forms trust. And this is when you start telling them about your products and if they'll like them they might decide to buy from you.

With this kind of marketing people are getting conversion rates as high as 10%...

There are many methods of promotion:
-submitting content to sites like ezinearticles
-creating videos and putting them on sites like youtube
-having great stories/news on your site and submitting them to sites like digg.com
-creating ads and putting them on sites like craigslist.com
-answering on yahoo answers and putting your link in them if it's relevant, posting on forums related to your niche and having a link in your signature, commenting on popular blogs etc etc

Sorry, seems like I confused your intent of sending opt-in newsletters with untargeted spamming. Ignore, what I said then (mea culpa - I once even wrote a software to do exactly that).
