Does anyone know of any directory components for Joomla that will easily let visitors add links - these don't have to be recipricol or paid and the user shouldn't have to register. A free solution would be great but I'd welcome paid suggestions.
jaddresses might do it. i'm sure any functionality you'd want to differ would be easy to code. http://extensions.joomla.org/component/option,com_mtree/task,viewlink/link_id,225/Itemid,35/ for commercial there is Phil Taylor's mosDirectory http://extensions.joomla.org/component/option,com_mtree/task,viewlink/link_id,359/Itemid,35/
A few weeks back I search for a free joomla module that made it possible to create a directory but I wasn’t able to find one. There is a commercial but I have never used it. This one looks interesting
I'd have to say that the best I've seen thus far is in fact a paid option and that's the Phil Taylor mosDirectory that natsirtm mentioned .... but, it's not an expensive addon, like 30USD I think after exchange rate.
Aahh - sorry Matt. I just got to thinking after I plugged Phil's mosDirectory - that's more of a yellow pages type directory, and not a typical web directory of sorts. However, it's still the best I've seen for that ....
for commercial this would probably be even better for what you wanna do. it actually runs extensions.joomla.org - sorry when i first saw the title i thought it was a menu tree extension. http://www.mosets.com/tree/ http://extensions.joomla.org/component/option,com_mtree/task,viewlink/link_id,233/Itemid,35/ this is the extensiond "directory" category http://extensions.joomla.org/component/option,com_mtree/task,listcats/cat_id,1770/Itemid,35/
you can use xtdratings as well. I am developing a site using same and looks best and a typical directory. It uses Joomla's Sections and Categories as Category>Subcategory and we cant create subsub categories into it. We can add custom fields to it and other users can review it as well. I will post the url of website very soon once its complete. You can check more abt xtdratings at joomlaratings.com
you can also try AlphaContent http://extensions.joomla.org/component/option,com_mtree/task,viewlink/link_id,620/Itemid,35/ It also creates a directory like structure of Section/Categories and you can decide which Section/categories to include in directory. Works quite well and very easy to setup.
Try Sobi, many options, and its free. Lots of add ons for Sobi as well. You can add featured postings, charge for certain areas via paypal, etc.... We just started using Sobi, and it works great. You can take a look as an example: http://www.freearticleforyou.com/web-links.html
I agree with freecashtube, sobi2 is the way. Not out of the box, lot of design work to improve the initial design
And What components we need to turn Joomla site into article directory ? I've a website in joomla , I want to convert it into complete article directory. Is this possible ?
Hmm... Maybe AlphaContent? http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions/directory-a-documentation/directory/5023 AlphaContent, as described by the developers and based on my prior experience with it, takes existing articles from your site and builds a Yahoo-style directory out of them. You can see the demo here: http://testing.visualclinic.fr/alphacontent.html It's a pretty hardy extension with a lot of back-end options, and it is FOSS. So, you can download it, experiment with it and see if you like it.
