Most surfers don't check links beyond the first page or two of results (10/page).

Users check only one 1st page of the search page and hardly the second page. So if you are listed in the page 5 with competitive keyword very few visitors visit your website.

If it's not on the first page, it's not good enough. There is no difference being at #50 or #100.

Anything after the first page isn't considered good for most terms.

Not really good since most of internet users tend to visit sites that are listed on first page(first 10 sites) only. Try to make your site to be at first page in serp.

As per the facts and figures available, more than 80% of the traffic comes from the first 3 pages of search engine result pages. This should answer your question.

I suppose it would be considered a good ranking if it was a high competing keyword such as "SEO" however in terms of traffic its still too high for you to receive a good amount of traffic.

Top 50 is good if its a competitive term. Im top 50 for a term with 280,000,000 results and I get maybe 10 or so clicks from it a day. Some people go past first few pages, but most dont.

It really depends on the popularity of the KW you're targeting. I personally stay away from really competitive KW's as it will take longer to rank high in the SERPs. I'd rather focus on niches that are less competitive and can get in the top 10 within 3-6 months. From my own searching experience, I don't look past page 3 as the relevancy becomes less and less.

AFAIK (from a research I read), only about 5% of the users go past 1st or 2nd page.

Agreed. You can count upto maximum 3 pages in Google..That's why when I do the keyword and competitors analysis for my clients I do it upto 3 pages.

Surveys suggest people never look beyond the first 2 pages, i personally never look beyond the first.

To get in the top 10:
Make sure you have more backlinks than your competition
Make sure your page abides to all the SEO rules
Make sure your page has a higher page rank than your compitetion
Make sure you have a good keyword density

But ive personally experience that seo traffic aint what people have made it out to be. Write artcile, do social networking, submit your rss feeds, create viral software, post viral videos that will give you ample amounts of traffic. under 50 is a good undertaking if you are vying for a competitive keyword but people rarley go past the first 2 search pages (20 results)

You will get most of your traffic in the top 10, but if you are in the top 50 for a very popular keyword you will get some traffic, even if you are #40-50.
