Directories are Over - Time for the New Age of Promotion

I've been in this industry for a long time, have seen the Good, the Bad and the Ugly attempt to 'be something' and despite the commendable effort involved - they ultimately fail.

My feelings are that G directories have a bad rep, and because of this stigma, they don't work well enough for advertisers - the advertisers know this and avoid them altogether. I predict the start of a new wave of super portals taking over the now ruined directory industry, but this will take years to be recognised and accepted.

A new type of promotion has been needed for a long time.... But ofcourse, the trick is how to do this, and with 'The Grid' taking over the internet, many tired old promotion models will cease to exist, including G directories.

It's going to be a major problem for those that trade off of PR, and many will crumble once this takes hold. The future will crush directories and possibly most search engines that cannot or don't adapt to new technology.

    The basics are:

An example is Yahoo. But Super Portals will eventually extend beyond what Yahoo offers, and Yahoo offers what Google cannot - so the next website vision/idea must go beyond what Yahoo offers etc etc. But it will include superior promotion technology as that's the key to customer retention.

The likely senario is that promotional services will get better, and newer, different services will come next - and then we'll get more entrepreneurs venturing onto the web. They will be the new breed.........

Directories are far from dead but they still must evolve along with the rest of the world. What we know as a directory is moving beyond a clunky list of categorized URLs. The next few years will be very revealing. :)

"Directories are Over - Time for the New Age of Promotion"

    - According to who?
    - How well researched is this sort of conclusion or whatever it is?

"My feelings are that G directories have a bad rep, and because of this stigma, they don't work well enough for advertisers"

    - Hmm.. based on feelings...this should say everything about how professional is your research. I can only recommend you this.

"I predict the start of a new wave of super portals..."

    - Since you start predicting may I ask if you are related with this guy somehow?

"many tired old promotion models will cease to exist, including G directories."

    - Directories are not promotion models by purpose and finalities - you may want to read this

"A new type of promotion has been needed for a long time...."

    - Agree with that. New types of promotion and ways of web development are always needed. This apply to every single aspect of life not just the WWW or directories ...

"The future will crush directories and possibly most search engines that cannot or don't adapt to new technology."

    - Unless you are related with Nostradamus I can't see how you or anyone else would know for sure that "the future will crush...whatever...

"It's going to be a major problem"

    - Sounds rather scary than professional and constructive.

Let me tell you a couple of things...

First of all I get fed up on reading all the nonsense you post around with this "Dr. Who" attitude. Never posted my thoughts but I noticed that you don't try to build constructive posts that help the community but rather the other way around.

As long as the link building process will be a serious factor in rankings, as long as SEO will be alive, directories will survive and the good directories out there will have business. You may want to ask yourself why? Well...because there is no competition in this niche. As many quality directories as better for every webmaster looking to improve its website online presence.

I actually said long time before you were around this place that directories needs to evolve and develop into mini portals offering much more than a backlink to their visitors and clients so nothing new under the sun. Please bear in mind that I've said "develop" not "die" as other "specialists" would like to believe...

Posting things like "My feelings", "I know", "I predict" will only make from this thread just an unprofessional, laughable piece of crap.

    Thank you

You have quite a point there. Though I would agree that directories are not dead. Many still help with a good PR boost, occasional traffic and add to SERP. I like directories and see a new form of directory, but defiantly not "dead" directories.

Sounds to me your concept of "super portals" will eliminate anyone without huge budgets and staffing. Seems like that would make the Internet only a place for corporations. Doesn't make sense.

The OP's prediction of the demise of the general directory reminds me of Mark Twain's famous comment — "The reports of my recent demise are greatly exaggerated."

Did it occur to you that maybe, just maybe you are doing something wrong?

My feelings are that yes general directories have a bad rep, largely because of all the penalties handed down by Google. But reputation can be rebuilt in all forms and walks of like. The directory industry is far from ruined and it is up to those who have an interest in the industry to restore it.

Further more I predict that the earth will be largely wiped out in 2012 so this new wave of super portals will not have the years they need to be recognised and or accepted therefore it is not worth spending any time developing them. :D

I presume you mean new types of promotion for web sites and not new types of promotion for general directories. In which I respond that it is always the case that new promotion methods are needed.

In case you were not aware, Google is already attempting to destroy the PR traders. The crumbling has already started and it was nothing to do with any new super portals or marketing methods.

    LoL... just LoL....

    my 2 cents worth,

The huge majority of the general directories out there are not worth the domain reg fee.

That said, there do exist a few good quality directories out there, with tight editorial control. However, they provide almost no traffic to the included sites. I for one do not go to the yahoo directory looking for resources, or to dmoz for that matter.

Niche directories are a completely different kettle of fish. Looking for resources related to widgets. If you find a widgets resources directory, and like what you see, you are likely to go back again for other widget needs.

Directories are still very important, I tell you this not as a directory owner, but as someone who gets his sites listed in directories. Submissions to both free and paid directories have positive effects.

You seem to make the exact same thread every second week, getting a bit boring is it not? If it's your opinion of where directories are going, why aren't you making your own and portraying it to the world as the biggest and best?

Yes, the general directory market has been saturated for a long time. Only the higher quality directories with populated categories stand out.

I think people need to expand. I began to touch on this. Offering more services - articles, news, reviews, blogs etc is the way forward. Return visitors, referrals, a community....

Researched for years before I or anyone heard of the web - it's called progress. But if it's a real scare you are after: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/science/article3689881.ece

Has that made you rich? Will it make you famous?

You like Youtube, Good - because it's a reminder of what you should be striving for. But I doubt you have the money or know-how to do that, so perhaps you should keep quiet.

No thanks, looks like you wasted your time scouting for urls. Such an emotional attachment to something so worthless as the G directory model. Well, Good Luck man, I really hope it works out for you.

So you only agree with things you understand - but anything you don't get, must be bs right.

And I suppose Cars were never invented or the internet eh. How does anyone know anything - experience, knowledge, understanding perhaps. Can you not grasp that the old directory model is a thing of the past, and got made obsolete years ago.

Emotion is the mother of all fuck-ups!

Instead of scouting for crap urls, you want to take a look around at some of the sites that have 'made it'. I did post some major success stories some time back, but you seemed to have missed that. That post, and others like it, was meant to highlight what you should be trying to do - not pissing about with a sad dream (despite however commendable the effort is).

There are many entrepreneurial success stories and they never in the last 10 years - ever included a General scripted directory. Now what does that tell you

It tells you that they will never be written about and never get that sort of exposure. Only unique ideas make the news friend! I'll say it again, just so you never accuse me of not posting something of value:

Ideas must be unique, Ideas must be unique, Ideas must be unique, Ideas must be unique, Ideas must be unique, Ideas must be unique, Ideas must be unique.

There you go, in 1 minute, thirty seconds I've given you a huge tip that's worth more than any amount of posts on any forum. All you need to do is think of that idea, and you will get you millions and success.

Surely you can do that right? I doubt you can.

    Thank You :)

Grid computing has been around for years, that is nothing more than a sensationalist article written to attract traffic.

Instead of keep "highlighting" it for us why don't YOU put it into action.

    That you dont research well.

Dont presume to know what it tells people, it just makes you look arrogant.

Clearly not, as I said grid computing has been around for years, but now all of a sudden CERN is starting to develop the idea it must be new and it must be news.

Well said. Yes, there are a few decent generals out there - but that is the minority, and I wouldn't call those a major success.

What directory owners achieve on the web is only very minor acknowledgement and success - yet they hit forums like their some Millionaire or something. Then they act like gurus and at the same time beg for the next massive tip that will thrust them up the serps, only to have their link swap based efforts and serp position taken from them by real businesses with million dollar budgets. And I'm convinced that webmasters come on forums thinking that forums will provide the Golden secrets that will save them

Directories - oh man! This has always been the problem with copying another's idea, and is the only thing that won't die. I hate it when I see the next non-unique directory or other site giving it the big talk on forums and selling the PR value, this happened to Bluefind and others - and it so proves this G directory stuff rarely works. Why so many deny this goes on is beyond me, it's so obvious what goes on.

But when anyone goes against the grain to help and advise - they get slated lol. If they won't listen to the answers, then they shouldn't ask bloody questions then Doh!

EK - i think when evaluating your opinions here all one really needs to do is look to your overall negative reputation - ie shameless behavior.

The only thing I really know of you is that one minute you profess to be a know it all in the directory industry but cannot produce a single directory which is yours. Then you profess to be a contestant on big brother that has an affinity towards cushions. Then all the sudden that is not you.

So now you want to be the know it all authority on directories again and still have none to produce.

Talk about a lack of credibility!

Tell me EK what exactly makes anything you say credible at all? I would really like to be able to guage which circular file I should place your opinions in on my desktop. Can you help us out here?
