It's all about the persons reputation. This is why it is hard to get started into the freelance businses. However, once the reputation is set, you are good to go and basically have everything you want/need infront of you.

Me personally, I ask for some deposit

Show the code on my server

When the code is complete, the client is happy, no bugs found I ask for the complete payment and send over the script

Here are some scripts I have built (email details on there to contact me)

    www.tigerscripts.com

(Please note, it says I will do free scripts, that is for basic scripts, for personal use only, not business)

Yes, I agree with that, you can outsouce a small project without risking big $ and you can get a pretty good idea of someone's integrity from working with them on that one project.

Why are you scared choosing a developer. I mean if you have a fear like this try employing a in-house developer.

I don't think he's scared per-say, he's just trying to cover his bases and reduce the chances of getting ripped off.

As I said, I think the best way, is to see they have some work.

My way of working, i think should be the only way for freelancers online.

Build a small part of the script, receive deposit, finish script, with changes required by the client, and the script for you to see. When both parties are happy, Pay the freelancer, at this point, if the freelancer has created the script, with your changes, it is very unlikly, he will not send you the script, he has done the work, all he has to do is email.

Remember the Freelancer has to be careful, it has happened, where the script has been sent to the client, and no money receieved from the client.

We are people as well, and this is our living, so if we spend either one day, or one month on a script, we still need money.

You get what you pay for, especially in this field. Most of the people on these freelance sites are only good at taking existing scripts and modfiying them based on your needs. If you want a truly knowledgable person it does cost money. If you want, drop me a PM and I can refer you to a guy who is a true expert with 9+ years doing php/mySQL. He is the best.

On what grounds can you base a php programmer as good or bad?

I base it on many factors: if they can do the job right the first time, their years of experience and portfolio, if they can code from scratch without using existing scripts, if they think about security in their code, if they can quickly debug problems, if they create clean, well documented code, and if they can suggest better solutions than what I asked for. If someone can do all that, I would call them "good".

As a programmer I like to ask where I can find a trusted client...

Its really a double edged sword as most clients seem to want coding done for nothing and do not value the time of the programmer. Most professional programmers will try to direct the client in a way where its beneficial for the client which usually results in up-charges/change-orders.

The problem is that the clients usually does not agree with the programmer and are also in a hurry so they sacrifice quality for lower cost and faster time of delivery. Then when things go bad they blame the developer instead of themselves.

I have worked on many Enterprise level projects utilizing PHP for clients like CVS, American Skandia, Konica, Verizon, and many others and almost everytime I was forced to deal with client based PM's that have no clue about the technologies involved or the time it takes to create something.

I can think of one particular situation for Verizon where I had 2 weeks to create a simple if statement. 80 hours at my rate is not cheap. That comes out to almost $6,000 for one line of code. I feel the clients need to be more educated then the programmers as this is a waste of money and resources which causes our phone bills to go up, prescription prices to rise, etc...

CVS is currently paying a team of 4 programmers $18,000 a week to create a straightforward application that before I left I was able to create a custom version in 3 weeks without any code reuse. And we wonder why prescription prices are so high. BTW CVS is currently $1 million dollars over budget on their project... Ineffective management can really affect alot of people...

    Mike :)

ps. might be some typos and run-ons but I was in a rush...lol

everythng has sounded sweet but when he sent me the link to where my stie would be demo something just didn't feel right.

    the link was www.snar.no/raines

now i didnt expect anything to be there but when i just checked the normal site www.snar.no i was shocked. if this is, in fact , his company site. i am not impressed.
