What is SEM?

I know that sem stand for search engine marketing. But how?
Like SEO methods...

Article submit
Directory submit
blog
social bookmarking
forums etc...

But how to work SEM?
Can anyone give me reply?

Sem involves seo and search engine advertisment (most often with Adwords), so it involves all the marketing tricks to get traffic from the search engines together, both free and paid.

With free I mean the organic results in google and yahoo!. So if you have links to your site, your pages will automaticly get crawled to come in the organic results. So nothing to submit to.

And for articles you should look for articles about both seo and sea. A good place to start is http://sphinn.com/ which is the social network for internet marketers.

Nope. Affiliate doesn't necessary have to do with search engines. E.g. an affiliate link doesn't have to pass link juice and won't get indexed in the serps. And email marketing is also totally separated from the search results.

What you mean is that seo, sea, Affiliate marketing, Email marketing, PPC, word of mouth marketing and who knows what more, is a part of internet marketing. And even sem is a part of internet marketing but more focussed on getting known/ getting a higher penetration or how you want to call it.

Simply said: If it doesn't involve a search engine, it won't be search engine marketing.

That's true, but when it is about email marketing or affiliate marketing, it doesn't necessarily involve a search engine anymore.

 

This is not exactly true. It depends who is doing the SEO and SEM. I have tested the same keywords in google serps and adwords and get better results in the serps. It is also MUCH cheaper to go with SEO.
