How Often do you Update/Upload your Sitemap File?

Discussion in 'Google Sitemaps' started by AcornDesignz, Jun 30, 2008.

Just wondered about what you all do?
I am constantly updating our website in my job on a daily basis.

    • Updating new products
    • Removing obselete products
    • Updating pages for SEO

I have the Sitemap.xml file configured for Google through the Webmaster Tools, the URLLIST.TXT file for Yahoo, and continually monitor my webmaster tools account for error 404 pages, etc.

How often do you upload the sitemap? At the moment I can update/upload this sitemap 3-5 times per day.

Should I just be limiting this to once a day? Or even once ever other day?

I would think more than once a day is a bit overkill myself.

I have a module that automatically updates mine as soon as new content is made. That takes my mind off management and lets me focus on getting good content (or products) up on my site. How often you update is entirely dependent on how "important" or "time-sensitive" your information is. Updating my sitemap twice a day is not enough for me. I have new downloads that come out every hour (when I'm uploading). So, for me the answer is, all the time. Plus, this keeps your index in Google updated and fresh. You don't want a whole slew of old content sitting in Google. Hope this was of some help.

Man I really need to update mine more often... This could really be one of my problems and the reason my PR fell. Ya think that could result in PR dropping?

To my knowledge, no? However I could be wrong. But unless you update something on your site occasionally, the crawlers will not recrawl previous content. Again I could be wrong though.

I'll update the sitemap once in a week. Once I updated, I could see more search engine traffic...

If you're updating your site's content frequently, Google will recognise this and will crawl your site more often than a site that is only changed occasionally.

If your site layout is good then any new or amended pages should get indexed quickly because of this frequent crawling, irrespective of whether you have updated your sitemap or not.

We us the gSiteCrawler sitemap generator 2 time per week for a 830 page web site (avg) But you should run it after any major upgrade, or global (common code) change. Just make sure the "last modified" data of the file (page) changes.

If yuo are usng Wordpress then leave all the work to the Dagon Design Sitemap Generator plugin. You will mot have any worry of updating your stemap manually.

I don't have even a working sitemap, since I don't understand much of this stuff and really just concentrate on backlinks and content and no spam on my site. G seems to still pick up on new content I've put in the site for purposes of appearing in searches including those phrases without me doing anything except editing my content. Seems to be working.
