what actually means "deep link"?

some one please clarify what means" deep link "and what is it,s role in SEO?
i heard some of the reciprocal link directories require deep links, if it,s not they will not accept submission what,s that ?

Deep links refer to links pointing to inner pages (not homepage)

 

[http://forums.digitalpoint.com/newreply.php] is a deeplink.

[http://forums.digitalpoint.com] is a subdomain.

[http://www.digitalpoint.com] is top domain or main domain.
