connot understand what page rank is

in my 50th post, this one, I would want to ask you guys what is the Page Rank? I've installed the google toolbar, where I can see the page rank for the page I'm seeing for a given keyword. Right? I searched in google for J2ME (Jave 2 Micro Edition) and of course the first page is the http://java.sun.com/javame/, since sun is the owner of the specification. But the weird, to me at least, is that the page rank for that page is 0/10. Can anyone give me an explanatio about this?

Page rank has nothing to do with keywords. It is simply googles rank for that particular page. http://java.sun.com has a PR of 9, but http://java.sun.com/javame has a PR of 0. It could be a 0 because the page is new or for other unknown reasons.

 

Yep, pagerank has nothing to do with keywords. It's just a measure of how many and the quality of sites that link to a single page. The page you mention is probably new, so the toolbar PR hasn't yet updated or it's not linked from any other pages.

 

Page rank is a value which increases with increasing backlinks .. this is a simple definition .

 

pagerank is estimated popularity, the more links to it the more popular should be

but it oesnt mean rankings for any specific keyword

 

yes exactly , also the more Quality relevant links , the better.

 

Use page rank as a quality guide for incomming links, but don't look to much into it. Focus on your serps and the rest will take care of itself.

Pagerank's significance is open to much speculation. It has nothing to do with traffic, nothing to do with keywords, and very little to do with backlinks. The benefits of a high PR are unknown; as are the penalties of having a low page rank.

I created a new site about 3 weeks ago that has one page, the home page. The site has a PR = 5. It receives only about 27 visitors a day, which are almost completely the result of PPC ads from Yahoo. I placed a couple of links to the site from my heavy-traffic PR6 site. So what does this mean? I don't know.

 

I'm not sure you'd find many people who'd agree with that statement.

 

I believe it is highly dependant on how relevant your backlinks are, how many backlinks you have, and somewhat dependant on your content. Page rank may not directly effect your search engine rankings, but the things that qaulify you for high page rank also qaulify your site for higher page rankings.

 

It basically depends on the Page Rank of the web page where your link is placed.

 

Really not true. My 3-week old site has a PR5 yet it can't be found anywhere in search listings for any relevant keywords. My question again is: What is the real value of PR except for bragging purposes? It may be the RESULT of some magic Google formula, but it doesn't CAUSE anything or even MEASURE anything of significance.

Obviously, backlinks have something to do with PR but a large number of quality backlinks doesn't necessarily mean increased traffic, which is what I think Google was orginally trying to imply. However, most backlinks are in "link farms" or site link pages that visitors never visit. Most generate little or no traffic.

Not that a high PR gives good rankings.

He's right, PR is a by-product of good rankings, you'll find that to get good rankings you'll need lots of good links, which usually pass good PR. Apart from that it's not much use, gets your site spidered more often and it's easier to find good link exchanges, that and you can brag about it.................

 

Sorry, but I absolutely disagree. There's nothing to indicate that this is true. My real-life example says that it is not true. So we'll just have to agree to disagree.

High Page rank websites are crawlled more often by google bot thereby the chances of getting more pages increases.

Page Rank basically has nothing to do with your ranking in SERP. You can achive good PR very easily just placing your link on a few high PR pages but, getting good ranking in SERPS require more than that.
