Are having hyphenated domains good?

Discussion in 'Domain Names' started by hackersrepublic, Jun 28, 2008.

    hi,
I wanted to ask how good are hyphenated domains like c-o-m-p-u-t-e-r.com

was just curious about these domains as they have generated quite some interest off late.

So, i thought i would ask the members here

    Cheers!

Just because that one sold for 3k doesn't mean a similar domain will. Think of it this way. Two car dealer ships selling the exact same car. Just because they are selling the exact same car does not mean they will get the exact same price. It all depends on the buyer and how much they think its worth.

The type of domain you have there is worthless. But hyphens joining words together (eg new-york-jobs) aren't as bad as many people think. While they will still bring down the value of your domain I have found then to be good for SEO.

csi is right there. hyphens are better for SEO, but I don't think hyphens are good if you want to brand your domain name. I mean people always get problems remembering a domain name if it has hyphens.

Oh the hyphen questions return agian.
Here is our take on hyphens. They are compromising. Like any thing other then a .com is doing the same. Hard work is needed in all endeavors. This applies in our opinion at the beginning of any effort in this case the domian name the least exspensive part of beginning an online business.
Look we have about 11 years of names here Domain Name Portfolio and out of all of these we own 1 one hyphen domain name. We do not even use it. I think it was a drop so we bounght it.
Buy a domain name clean .com no nothing else hyphens are going to be a thorn in your side if not today perhaps tomorrow when your business takes off then you want to expand and their it is a thorn in your side.

Look here is how we rationalize buying the best we can.

pick and industry like cars, boats, pets, or anything look at the domain name.
We think you are not going to find a single successful company with any extension other then .com and we would (though not impossible) not find one of these with any hyphens either.

These are just the rules we run our company by and have been for 15+ years now. WOW seems just like we opened yesterday. Time flies when you love and have a passion for what you do.

1 hyphen is fine if it seperates keywords, 2 ok but pushing it. Anymore than 2, and it gets cumbersome.

Same here :) I couldn't think of anything more annoying than having to type in a whole word that was hypenated though (like c-o-m-p-u-t-e-r.com).

Yeah the fact is not too many people type in the domain name anymore so if you get up on the results in google then it really doesn't matter how many hyphens. Search for Tome in google. The first result is a hyphenated .net.

I own a few myself like C-L-I-C-K and C-L-I-C-K-E-R (.coms).

And there have been quite a decent value few sales in the last few months.

I think the reason domains with dashes are not so good as the ones without is that people tend to type the names without the dashes... as in thecomputer.com instead of the-computer.com

But with an example like c-o-m-p-u-t-e-r.com, people would remember that the most memorable thing about the domain are the dashes in between the letters, so I reckon it's no so bad.

single hypens separating 2 good keywords are ok in my opinion but people will always think that you bought those because you couldnt get the one without the hypen. For SEO good value but maybe not ideal for company branding and such.

They are absolute pieces of crap IMO. Totally worthless. Personally, I wouldn't reg any of these type of names.

Please, feel free to share with us the sales of these L-L-L-L-L-L.com etc. names as I'm curious as to the "decent value sales in the last few months"
