I haven't done directory submissions in over a year. ever since google revoked alot of the directories page rank I back burnered the technique. Do you guys still to mass submissions? Does the time pay off? I just want to know how common this practice still is.

    Hi there,

I think you should still submit your websites to directories BUT.....

Don't make it your number one priority.

At the end of the day, it won't harm you to carry on with directory submissions, so if you can find the time then by all means do it. But concentrate on other methods of backlinking first.

    All the best,

    John.

YUp, directories submissions can still provide good result for serp. However, like said, this should not be the only technique.

I will only submit to the more popular directories... BUT the only reason I would consider submitting to many is to get a higher crawl rate. I still only submit to 10-20 directories.

There are very few directories worth wild submitting too; I would avoid spending too much time submitting to directories.

Spend 15 minutes a day submitting to directories then spend the rest of your link building time on other stuff. I've had good success with this method. I like to focus on the niche directories first since they are more likely to actually generate traffic to my site and they are more closely related. As a result the links carry more weight.

Make a gradual submission instead of a mass submission. Keep it mind that only quality links count. Avoid submitting on those penalized and bad neighborhood sites.

I normally check following things to judge the penalty: number of indexed pages, directory ranks for it's own name and I see the 'latest additions / new sites' page to see what kind of websites the directory is accepting.

You can't be sure. Even if you are extra cautious with your submissions and submit to good directories, there is no way you can know if the directory won't be sold to someone with lower moral values :)

Try to submit in all the directory so that your website URL must appear in all the directory portals. Submit in two to three months gap.

submitting your websites to directories is just what the majority does! It's not so effective but why not? It's for free and it gives benefits after a period of time!

personally I don't know what the obsession with directory submissions are. Submit to Google, Yahoo and MSN and forget the rest. They will index your site over a 6 month period anyway. I wouldn't waste my time submitting to other directory sites, it's just a sales gimmick.
